how to quote only a portion of a post?

How do you quote only a portion of a post. Everytime I try it, the quote doesn't come in the green quote box.

Also, when you erase, do not erase any of the quote formatting or it won't show up in the green quote box. You need to have the word quote in [ ]'s at the beginning and the word /quote in [ ]'s at the end.
