OK..... I learned how to establish an avatar.
Now, I'll be darned if I can figure out how to go back to no avatar!

It's done in your profile, about half way down the page to the right of where it reads "Avatar / Picture URL", click in the "Edit" link. From the window that opens click the "Custom Avatar" link. Remove your avatar url then click on the "Update Avatar" tab. Poof.... it's gone.

That's exactly what I did and it didn't seem to matter. Maybe it takes a while to update?
