Malicious ad

I just clicked on an ad that appeared on the top of this site. When I did I got a new web page warning me that my computer had been infected and I should call a number to get things fixed. The admins for IRV2 need to check on the adds being displayed on the site. If you get this warning use Task Manager to shut down your browser. You computer is not infected.

We have not been hacked, but it sounds like Google served us a malicious ad.

It's unfortunate that some people abuse the system by showing deceptive ads. The best solution is to report them to us, but the most actionable item to report is the domain name, or URL of the offending site. With that we report them to the ad network (Google) and block them from being served here.

At least our IRV2 admins are interested, and care about things like this. I had a recent instance where I connected to a popular comic strip website, and an ad opened a full-screen window demanding that I do a critical Chrome update. It was obviously an attempted malware infection. When I reported it to the site admins, I got a response saying that all our ads are clean and safe. When I pushed, then I got a demand that I give them the specific page and ad the malware came from. Good luck with that, under the circumstances.

So thanks, IRV2, for caring!

FWIW, if/when I do see ads, I'll only click on the ones from our site Sponsors. Those Google ads can be sneaky, mimic legitimate ads but cause all sorts of problems. I don't trust the one that displays above the Mission Statement. At least the ads by our Sponsors have been cleared by us.

How is it one careless match can start a forest fire but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

Gotta love the big red blinking scam ad near the top middle of the page that says you "Have 2 New Messages". Sure, like I'll really ever click on that!

Wish I could see the page in text only, and avoid all of the HTML stuff.
