I started a thread in the ....towing vehicles forum---question re. suspension. I noticed that it didn't show as a "new post", but it's there in the forum. Shouldn't it show up as a new post? Help--I'm new at this.

If you used the same method as you used to post this thread then, yes it should have shown as a new Thread. Try using the world, paperclip looking icon to post a link to the thread so we can easily find it.

It will show up as a new post to others. Since you posted it , it's not a new post to you as well as other posts you've read. Once you read a post , it no longer is " new " to you.
Now that I sounded like I know what I'm talking about , I must say that it is a guess on my part.
