Normally payment is received before the item is shipped.

I have always requested U.S. Postal money orders or bank/cashiers checks when I am the seller.

PayPal is a very large intermediary used for similar transactions. You see PayPal used on eBay quite a bit. I'm sure they take a cut for brokering the deal but I believe you get guaranteed funds by using them.

Actually, I have bought and sold items on this site and never had the first problem. To the contrary, one person sent the item I wanted and said if it didn't work out don't pay me at all and keep the item. It worked just fine and payed him. We still communicate about RV's to this day. RV specific sites do not seem to attract the Nigerians as much as ebay, craigs list and some others. JMIHO Good luck.

I'm sure that my time is coming to get ripped off, but the few things I've sold over the Internet have been to individuals I "cyber-know" on various forums. I've shipped Reese rails, power/heated mirrors, a Flex-a-Lite dual puller cooling fan assembly, etc. to individuals and told them, "If it's what you're looking for, pay me. If not, ship it back." I've always been paid - so far.

Of course, I'm old enough to remember that, when I was a kid, we didn't even lock our house when we went on vacation, either.
