Signature line ; should it be a required field ?

My rant of the day.

Too many members ; new and old; are posting without providing good " basic " info , on there RV's. Make , model , year and in the case of motorhomes CHASSIS manufacturer.

I asked when I joined , why a signature line wasn't required , because ; when trying to help others my first questions , always seemed to be " what type of RV are you working on" or similar requests for better info.
Administrator at the time stated privacy issues,
We don't need your real name and credit card numbers , SS and drivers license, just the year , make , model and chassis , of your RV.
If you go to NAPA, for an air filter for your vehicle , those are the first questions you'll be asked; and the answers have to be accurate.
If you say ; " I've owned it for 5 years, it's a Chevy and has four doors. "
Not only won't you get your correct parts , you'll probably just get escorted from the building.

Sure, there are members , who joined up just looking to purchase their first RV , and that could be OK on their signature line too.
How many members , will read a post , and give up on trying to provide ANY help ; because they know they don't have enough info to provide an accurate answer, and can't be bothered to ask for more info.

Just my rant for the day. Now back to trying to help .

Some members need to be asked/ reminded as they may not be aware of it.
Our members do a good job of asking those who haven't to do so.
Here's the instructions for those willing to pass it along.

To edit or add a signature,

click on User CP at the top left of every forum page,

under Settings & Options click on Edit Signature,

make your changes and click on Save Signature.

I'd rather have them keep the information current in their profile and limit the signature line to a one liner. If knowing the details of their setup is required to better answer the question, I can easily find it.

It does help if you fill in pertinent information in your signature. Especially if one has questions.

Is it required? No. Should it be required? No. Is it helpful when asking questions? Yes.

If someone posts a question related to a specific chassis, engine, manufacturer and they don't have that listed in sig, or pro. then I'll ask. If they have difficulty answering that, then I know how better to phrase my answer. When I ask a question I like to go overboard with information. Serial number, year, pic if possible, etc.

Yep! I only use the iPhone app, and can't see a signature line. Not that tough to look in the profile.

It doesn't bother me if they have a sig line or not. The make, model, length of their RV is only 2 clicks of the mouse away in their profile.
If I'm too lazy to do that, I'm also too lazy to type a reply.

As good as an idea asw this may be, it would require the site owner to have someone write custom code to implement it, as it's obviously not a generic, off-the-shelf type of request. Even just requiring someone to have a signature, without specifying the needed fields, would require new code.

Some don't fill out the Profile either so then you have nothing.
