Either some people are lying or they really do have some pathetic ISPs.

An XP ping should net you three returns.

When I had Alltel wireless internet, I got maybe 1-2 drop-outs in 24 hours. Since Verizon gobbled up Alltel, I now get 1-2 drop-outs an hour.

Never. I figured out where all those paragraphs went. Give them back "F", you've abused them long enough.

No problems here in Eastern NC. Laptop, desktop, Ipad, or android. Myfi card, wireless or wired as long as my connection is good.

Sorry, that was a joke. Didn't mean to call you lairs.

Midniteoyl, that looks way better.

Those time outs deserve a phone call or your connections re-seated/re-connected.

I had a desktop that wouldn't connect to my wireless network until I rebooted my router.

As ljr stated. There are many, many things that go on when you push a button.

First, make sure that your computer is working as it should. Delete caches, clean registries, and all the other items people have indicated.

Now think of the Internet as the road system of the World. I'm not kidding here. There is no direct wire from your computer to any other point on the Internet. Everything has to go through a "hub." It starts with your neighborhood. How many people on your street go through the same "hub?" How many in your campground are using the same "hub?" How many in your city are using the same "hub?"

When you get in your automobile and start to travel down the roadways you expect that you will be able to do the speed limit, or as close to the speed limit that you can. However, you get into traffic situations, even traffic jams. Everything may move, but at a much slower pace. That is why I state that the Internet is a set of highways. They also jam up. The technology and equipment has gotten much better over the last decade, but there are still older technology in rural areas, and in areas where "trunk" providers have not upgraded their equipment.

Have you ever tried to make a phone call into an area that has had a disaster? Most of the time you will get just a busy signal. The internet is no different.

Yes, sometimes the server of the site you are on is having a problem and it is alright to query the administrators so they can check on it. However many times more than not it will be the trunk lines and hubs that have congestion or failure on them. When a trunk or hub does fail, most of the traffic can be re-routed, just like highway traffic, but this does cause a slow down. We just have to learn to live with it.

I'm on the road using 3G and I have had no slow downs so far.

Just a perspective from me.

There was a show on the Discovery or History channel explaining how it all works. Simply amazing. Tera-bytes of data moving all over the place. When you hit a hub, it has an index of everything and routes you in the right direction.

My problem seems to be when ever I click on a thread it starts to load fairly quickly but then stalls and the bottom says "transferring data from www.irv2.com" The screens lock up and can take up to 45 seconds to move again. This happens at my office and now while I'm on the road with 2 different computers and 4 or 5 different IP's. I'm starting to wonder if it's the goastly app. that blocks all the cookies and trackers.....

I've been computing since 1985 and have gotten only one virus, and that was on a laptop years ago and I deserved it for the site I went to. I disabled all firewalls, anti-virus and spyware programs and my desktop boots a minute and 20 seconds sooner. I don't advocate this for anyone, just my observations. I do have a router, if that helps protect against unwanted intrusions.

Don't know nutt'n bout 'pinging' and tracing. Would be nice to just left click the back arrow ONCE with the mouse, like it used to be weeks ago. Now I have to punch it four or five times (sometimes in quick succession)before I can go back to a page. The page numbers are no problem... and site speed is good. Bob

Curious. I just checked my back arrow and worked fine. I'm running IE8 on XP, btw.

I never use the back arrow anyway. I've found it is much faster when opening a post from a forum menu to right click on the post, then Open in New Window. When I'm done with the post, I close the window and I'm right back at the menu.
