Worthless Search Function

Why is it that every time I use the SEARCH function it comes back with thousands of useless threads that have no relationship to the search term used?

Example - Alaska (search term)

Plus if you use a two word search term like Alaska Trip it now comes back with more junk that includes tons of stuff about TRIPS.

Is there something that I am doing wrong? Or if not why can't the forum programmers come up with a better algorithm whereby the threads that are displayed are related to the search term?

Cliff,

Not sure what you are doing differently but it appears to me that you are using a different "search" than what I have been accustomed to using.

My post was in reference to the drop-down search function on the main menu located in-between New Posts and Quick Links.

It appears that you are using the search function located above the main menu.

What's the difference between the two?

One uses the forum software which is pretty primitive, the other uses Google which is basically the best search system in existence.

I use the Google one.

The only time I use the one on the green bar is if I'm trying to find something that I posted! Other than that, it's useless!

In general if you want to search for two (or more) words together you'll want to put them in quotes - "alaska trip". Otherwise many searches will treat multiple words as though there were an 'or' between between them and, as you found, return everything that has either word (ick).

Your best bet is to use google, and to tell it to search only in a specific site.
The format to use in the search is site:website.com "search for this"
For instance
site:irv2.com "alaska trip"
Paste the line above into a google search and see if it gives you about what you're looking for.

I agree the search function in the blue bar is worthless. Why not modify it, so it does what most of us think it should do?

In defense of the forum, the owners didn't write the script that is running the site. The forum posts are stored in a giant database and the forum search simply matches terms entered with those in the records. This can be useful in many case, but only if you understand how it works so you can narrow the results down to something useful.

The other option offered is a Google filtered search. This searches the site using Google's search algorithms and that usually will point you towards more useful information, especially if you're searching for something pretty generic (like Alaska.

Alvo hit the nail on the head. Even I've had problems using the iRV2 Search returning the results for which I'm looking. It's sort of a 20th century edition..i.e.outdated software. Google's search is 21st century, meaning it has up-to-date calculations to return what I want. I choose to use that one.

I realize why have a built in Search function if it doesn't work the way one wants it to? is not very helpful. However, it came with the software so we're stuck w/it. All the more reason to use the Google one. At least there's a choice if you're like me & haven't figured out the right phrasing to use iRV2's.

Thanks guys and gals for the explanation of the differences.

I will no longer use the forum search and start using the one above that Google offers.
