Picture post test

OK - three engineering degrees and I can't figure out how to put a picture in a post. I have pictures in the picture post area and I don't know how to get to them to include in a post. If I "manage attachments" and upload a picture it shows up as a file name that can be selected and attached but it only shows up as a link to the picture in the post, i.e. Attachment XXX. What am I doing wrong.

Oh by the way I use Mac computers so is there some compatibility issue.

Here is a post of an image I just uploaded by "manage attachments".
