Being a balloon pilot, my guess is that he hit some power lines based on what one witness said. She said she heard a couple of pops, like a gun shot. Also, depending on what size envelope, it could have been over gross weight with 16 people in the basket.

Yup, they confirmed that's what happened!

Such a tragedy. Hot air ballooning is so peaceful, truly the closest I can imagine doing to come that close to flying with the birds.......I'm sad reading about the pilot. I hope this does not dissuade folks from such a magical experience.

I would love to do it, but there's just too many accidents involving power lines!

This coming from a guy who was a skydiver in my younger days!

That is sad... never fib about your weight when you go in small aircraft or experimental aircraft. In fact it's best to tell them a few pounds over in case someone else fibs. Hubby flies a powered parachute and has to ask folks how much they weigh, helps him know how long they can fly, and he has a weight limit he won't take folks over, just so they are safe and can get off the ground before they run out of runway.
Wires and wind are always something to watch out for.

Article I read had report that power line had tripped 1 minute prior to 911 report of balloon accident.

Also that the balloon & basket were certified for 20 ---200# passengers

Pilot error?
Burner malfunction?
Balloon failure?

It will be years before NTSB releases official report/findings.
