Great Dane,

Thanks for the the "heads up" on the book "Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era" . I have not read that one. I am wondering what the steps are to obtain it with out cost (free) for my kindle ( I was not able to decipher the website you indicated to get to a free download of the book). I will order it for my kindle even if I have to pay the paltry sum of $9.48, but "Free" is a much better price .

I envision the coach parked at a campground with the awning out, a refreshing beverage in hand. myself in the reclining camp chair, relaxed and reading this book. Thanks for bringing the book to my attention.

Life is good.......

For anyone going to Gettysburg, James MsPherson has a very good audiobook, A Walk at Gettysburg. Gettysburg is a place he visits often and this book is a good guide on touring the battlefield.

The link I added seems to be good. Right ad the bottom of the page there is a button that says "download". Press here and a new page opens. Here I used the "Mirror download" to get to "Rapidshare". On the Rapidshare page the option in the centre (green colours) says "download to computer". Press here and after a short wait the "slow" download begins.

The file that you get is in PDF format. I think this is OK with the Kindle???

I hope it works for you.

PBS

To get a feel for the Burns series, you might want to watch this PBS video of the first chapter, "The Cause."The Civil War - The Cause (Episode 1 of 9)

Being from "out of town" I have never heard of PBS video, but what a gem you linked me up with. I am absolutely delighted

Whats more - searching the PBS video website I can see that there is a whole lot more. This one for example.

All episodes can be bought on iTunes for $4.99 each. That is worth considering.

It is a truly wonderful series for anyone interested in the topic. Burns is a great historian and remains true to factual issues. He has two other series that I particularly like, one is on baseball, the other on the American National Park system and how it came to be. You can find most of his work by googling Ken Burns.

Reading the history is important because it puts the battles into context. But I think that you have missed a lot if you don't physically see some of the places that they took place.

We started at Vicksburg, just because it happened to work out for us to tour that one. There are so many interesting parts
- the North tried to redirect the Mississippi River around Vicksburg
- initial assaults failed and Grant only tried them because he was pressured to do so. You will see, based on the physical layout, why an assault wasn't going to work.

I'm a "touchy feely" learner. I can read books and it doesn't mean as much to me as standing at Little Roundtop (Gettysburg) and looking out toward where Pickett's charge occurred.

Just my $.02 worth.

We did go to both Vicksburg and Gettysburg but this is over 20 years ago. Unfortunately we didn't at the time appreciate the historical value of what we was looking at.

Things change as you get older. When we were younger there was more important questions than what happened in 1860. This would be things like "look at that car - what will I have to do to get this?" and also important stuff like "what's for dinner tonight - can we have pizza?".

I still like nice cars and a well made pizza, but priorities seems to change with age. What seems boring back then now appears fascinating.

Yes - I know, I am starting to sound like my/your Dad

Great Dane,

You will quickly become a Ken Burns addict. I downloaded all of his National Park series to my ipad so I can watch them repeatedly and share them with others!

I went to Wilderness Va. to find where my G Granddad was captured during the Battle of the Wilderness. Thanks to a very helpful young lady at the visitor center I got within 200 yards of where it happened. Then went to Baltimore and found his grave site. Turned out to be a very good trip. Thanks iackrobinryan

What's the quality like on the downloads? Is it as good as DVD quality? I assume that it must be MP4 format?
