I retired at 51 in 1998, but kept doing IT contract work because my wife couldn't retire. Now she can, but is fighting some kind of illness and the Dr's can't figure out what's going on. On short term disability for another 4 months. I find a job is a good way to escape the house for a while!!
The main thing holding up really retiring is the 13 yr old grandson we're raising. Can't really go full time and neither of us wants to do home schooling.

Well, congrats is in order! However, what is this "retirement" you guys speak so freely about?

I am into my last year. Will retire about Dec 12, aged 62, after being behind a school desk (one side or the other) since I turned five. May do relief teaching for six months or so to build a bit more savings but looking forward to playing golf and visiting our many wineries.
Let me know if you run into any problems, Dale so I can avoid them!

Congrats to you, DaleM and others, on your retirements. I am on my own countdown, too. After 31 years in the nuclear energy business I have my sights set on a retirement between now and June 1st. We are on the wait list for the WIT caravan to Alaska ...

It was 2 days ago you had 40 days...now it is 38 days.

Can you tell I'm jealous?

Congratulations...I retired 3 1/2-years ago at 55...I can't say enough about not having to be at work every morning...it took me two years just to calm down enough to enjoy my mornings without "feeling" as if I were playing hooky...

Been retired 10 years and will be turning 65 in Feb. Hated work, love retirement, best time in life. Keep busy so that the "W" word never is in your vocabulary again.

Congratulations Dale. It'll take you a few weeks to realize that you're not on vacation and you don't have to go back. I retired back in `07 for 2 years. It took me 2 weeks to get over that feeling of being on vacation. I got bored and went back to work. Around Thanksgiving I finally realized I must be some kind of nut job. now I am 22 days into retirement once again. I honestly don't know how I had time to work. We're full time (have been since May `08) so we're sitting in Phoenix, AZ having my DW's wife repaired at Laser Spine Institute. 1 week after surgery and success can be reported. Now we can do what we want, when we want.

Congrats. I am retired as of April 30th as my job will be moved to the Internet. I turn 60 the next month. Two houses up for sale, my dgf has sold her company and we hope to be wheels DOWN by June 1st. Cannot wait. Dealing with short-timer's a#%, as they say. Good luck.
