A confession

I have to admit to a bit of Schadenfreude today. We were driving down the freeway today when a particularly unobservant idiot driver in a luxury SUV seemed to think that if he or she was just aggressive enough, the little MX5 right behind our coach would get out of the way and make room room for the SUV to merge onto the freeway. This led to some startled braking/manuvering by the SUV. Mind you, there was plenty of room behind the MX5 for merging. All the driver had to do was notice that the MX5 -with the tow shield on - was attached to the motor home, and they would have had no problem at all. I certainly wasn't feeling any sympathy for the idiot driver.

Yep, I was towing our Odyssey on the dolly one time and had the same thing happen! Don't know what car drivers are thinking!

OR, it could be that the driver of that SUV (were it not a luxury SUV, would it have made a difference?) was just having one of those moments. Still not good, but not an idiot. And unobservant and aggressive? Maybe one, but both?

I would defy anyone on this forum to swear they have never had one of those incidents in their lives. It happens. Most of the time, we all somehow manage to avoid the culprit and go on about our business.

It would be nice if everyone was always on their best while driving, but that probably won't happen.

Thnking.. No it is not "WHAT" they are thinking, it is "Are they capable of thinking".

First, I see a car that close to the motor home,,, I think "Towed" not "Drafting" But then some folks think close enough to step from car to car,,,,at 70 mph,,,, is not tailgating.

I still recall doing the speed limit one day going into work, slowly passing a semi truck when some 10-T passed me like I had the brakes on.. Then he noticed his exit, so at around 90+ MPH he turned hard right, how he kept from rolling it I do not know, and took the exit,,, Well on the exit is a steel hauler,,,,, Doing about 40 mph.

The exit is in kind of a ditch, formed a giant skate board half pipe,, He did a grand job of skating the pipe and managed to keep his weels down and miss the trailer... but we were hoping for a different outcome.

I have seen hundreds if not thousands, of examples of .. Driving with head up exhaust pipe, tanks to over 150 remote operated cameras and a remote controller on my desk at work,, but they still never cease to amaze me...

What is amazing.. That they survive.

Yes. Hang up and drive! It's the law in California but from the number of folks on their phones you would not think so...

During a California trip two years ago, a friend was pulled over for holding his phone so the police could see he was looking at it. He was told the fine was over $900, but was given a warning.

Regarding dumb drivers, my response is that they are "Ignorant or Arrogant"

Also be aware of Interstate Highways that allow semi triple trailer tows. Doubles are common so if you have a semi pass you and you want to move over to the left lane make sure you see the last trailer. A few that see the second trailer pass think, ok, I can move to the left only to find out there is a third trailer since it is your blind spot. Not good what happens next.

Proper merging technique seems to be a lost skill.

  • The fellow that slams on the brakes at the top of the ramp because he didn't pace himself to slip in.
  • The fellow that expects YOU to change your speed for them.
  • The fellow that cuts you off when there is plenty of room behind you.

We've all seen this and more.
