As the first 'yankee' born into a long line of southerns on both sides I use a lot of 'Southern expressions' (MS/AR/TN)
Even though I was born/raised in the West whenever I see a list of Southern
colloquialisms I wonder what the fuss is about -----they all seem correct to me.
Fact is they make me happier than a dead pig laying in the sunshine

Now there are some things one has to be cautious off
Ask for a 'coke' in West and you get a coca-cola----down south you get asked 'what kind'
Ask for Ice Tea in West and you get ask sweet/unsweet...down south it will be thick with sugar
Ask for directions and out West good chance you will get correct info......down south you will get 'how to git ov'r there' by use landmarks---most of which are no longer there (turn left where Homers barn was then 'bout 1/2 mile or so turn right where the big oak tree that burned down from that lightn storm back 8 yrs or so ago)

Then aginn if you ask for directions you might jst get looked at like a tree full of owls

Absolutely love the South..."fixin" means you are getting ready to "carry" someone some where or to do something.

X2 on the directions, but the people here are just great, good work ethics and ready to help a neighbor with about anything. We still havea barn raising, neighborhood cookouts with pot lucks, hog butchering days, farmers markets, and fall harvest festivals.

when I arrived and setup at Edisto Beach State park.. this past February .. the couple next site over.. came over and he offered his hand and said you Must be a Dam Yankee...

I guessed at that point I was in the South.

and I do NOT do FaceBook .. to many hot headed in-laws there.

I've long since been a student of southern accents. There are 7 or more distinct southern accents, and while working out of Atlanta I experienced them all.

The East TN hillbilly accent is unique, and it can also be found in Northern Arkansas because their relatives originally came from NE TN. They're both "You'in's", not Y'all people.
The Middle Tennessee accent skips West TN and shows up in Little Rock. It also shows up in Texas, as native Texans (if you can really find one) came from Middle Tennessee. For example, Laura Bush who grew up in Midland has a perfect Nashville, TN accent.
Go down to Lafayette, LA and you'll find a "coonass" southern accent. But go to Georgetown, SC and you'll find the same southern accent.
When southerners migrated to other parts of the south, so came their native languages. And the accent easily is carried through 4-5 generations. And when those of us hear the same accent we grew up talking, we don't hear or notice they're talking with a specific southern accent.

Note: Prior to WWII, Germany sent their spies to Mississippi to learn how to speak English. They figured if their spies could speak a perfect southern accent, nobody would spot'em as being anything other than southerner U.S. people.
