Jack I saw America live back during the summer of 76. I used to play Sister Golden Hair all the time for my high school girl friend.

Summer of 76 I was in the Med ...

I didnt like America ( the band ) back then , I only "discovered" them in the past year or so ..

Waltz Across Texas has always been one of my favorites , but hey anything from ET I liked ..

"Sandman" , to me , for some reason , is a very strange and haunting mix , and I have always enjoyed it ..

"Lady in Black" , pretty much the same as Sandman , tells a vivid story , that to me , just unfolds in your mind very easily ..

In the Spring of 1975 my Dad retired from Kaiser Industries. He was 52 for the next 6 months he listened to this song every night. He died 6 months after retiring in Nov of 75. It was on my 16th birthday. Today is the 1st time I could sit and lisiten to this song in 35 years. We lived in the San Francisco Bay Area. I now live in the Desert and love the shifting sand.
In 79 after graduating I joined the Navy. In 88 while deployed to the middle east I lost my mom and had to come home on emergency leave.

We took a ''barefoot cruise'' down to the ''Leeward and Windward'' islands on the Fantom some years back. She was a 3 masted ''bark'' and it was wonderful. We visited the small islands and some uninhabited (and uninhibited islands) .
When we pulled out of a port or an island they always played recordings of Amazing Grace on the ''pipes'' and Joan Biaz. They were always really moving and one evening as we left ''Tobago Cay'' it was really beautiful. The sun was just setting and I was setting on the ''spanker boom'' watching them ''break out the sails'' so we could catch the wind and leave for our next adventure. They started with the ''pipes'' just as they broke the main sail and the Fantom literally came to life under the sail and the light breeze. She pitched to starboard slightly as they broke another sail on the forward mast. I believe everyone was on deck and it was ''stone quiet'' with no sound but the music and the light breeze in the sails. We made a port turn and steadied up with a light breeze off the port quarter and eased out of the harbor with the music playing and the sun sinking in the Caribbean Sea like a big orange ball. I sat on the ''spanker boom and watched and recorded video'' and felt the presence of God there with us. Joan Bias came on next and we hit the soft land swells outside the harbor and eased past the outer marker with everyone just standing and watching the sun go down. When the music ended we were outside and heading toward more adventure. People actually applauded, some were crying, some kissed and there was an ambiance on the ship that could not be understood unless you were there. Music is the great mover of men and that ''song'' Amazing Grace is one of the greatest song ever pinned by anyone.

We were on the Fantom for a week and it was one heck of an adventure.

Nuff said for now from the memory of an old sailor from an adventure long ago.
