Three miles to school was an easy trek. There were also 3 towns around us that were 4 miles away. It was nothing to walk to one of them to use their beaches to swim. Our pond was 3 miles away and we walked to it all the time.
OR, we hitchhiked - and all over the place with never a fear.
The winter provided a lot of opportunity for sledding, and it was done in the streets in town, and there never was a problem, never and accident of a sledder running into a car, or a car into a sledder. We watched out for each other.
Skating on the ponds was wonderful, but there was one area that was purposely flooded every year by the town for ice skating. It was two houses down from where we stayed.
Roller skates had 4 wheels and you had to have a good pair of shoes with good soles to clamp them on. And if you lost the skate key, someone always had one.
