Greetings IRV2 family!! My wife and i will be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary and decided to go to the northeast. Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont etc. We will be going the 2nd and 3rd week of October. We would like suggestions on campgrounds, interesting places to see and of course the best places to eat!!! We did a trip to Maine and New England in September last year. We hit the height of the Fall colors and had a great time. Going in October, I'm afraid you'll be past the peak of the turning leaves and you'll find a lot of campgrounds closed for the season, check carefully to be sure they're open. We spent 4 days in Bar Harbor and explored Acadia National Park.

Many campgrounds close immediately after the Columbus Day (Monday, Oct. 12, 2015) weekend.
We've stayed here: Libby's Oceanside Camp - York Harbor, Southern Maine Coast and enjoyed being right on the beach.
Take care,
Stu

As mentioned a lot of the campgrounds will be closed that late in the season. I'd check with www.campgroundreviews.com to find and call campgrounds you might be interested in. It would be hard to find a terrible place to eat. If it's lobster you want, we always can find a place that will cook them for us to take home. A lot of the grocery stores will do that, or a lobster pound for that matter. If you have a towed it's easy to see the sights by centrally locating yourself and then daytrip.

We camped in MA, ME, Vt, and NY in early Sept through late Sept. Hit the color change in VT in mid-Sept and had a great time. In ME we stayed at a campground called Wild Duck Campground in Scarborough this was close to Portland ME and other towns we were interested in. The Campground was adults only campground no children allowed and very reasonable for full hook-ups with 50 AMP site. Portland Lobster Co is a good place to eat in Portland ME.
Another campground we stayed at was in VT called Limehurst Lake in Williamstown VT. This was near several attractions that we visited. Such as Green Mountain coffee, Ben and Jerry's Ice cream and the Rock of Ages quarry.
But like others say most campgrounds in the Midwest and Northeast close after Columbus day. Another area of concern for me was the road conditions in VT, the main interstates are great but some state highways 2 lane roads when crossing the mountains turn into dirt roads. I did not feel comfortable pulling my trailer up and over them. So we had to travel about 100 miles out of our way to cross them when traveling home. State highway 2 is a fully black top road but it does go through some towns and one portion does has a 8% grade if memory serves me right.
