Question After you cancel a reservation at a CG

After you cancel a resv. @ a CG,
At a very busy CG this time of year. I am pretty sure it was re-reserved with in hours of us canceling. We did cancel a week before the date we had reserved.
We gave up the monies placed at time of making said resv. with no quibbles.(Refund given if before 30 Days)
We didn't get a sorry, maybe next year. No response. Is this a rarity or the norm. They also passed us on the 10 year rule. I'm not a sensitive Person either.
I guess to each there own.
Happy New Year,
Tim

In all my past experiences, you are bound by their rules, and they can make up their own rules.

If it says 30 days you usually have to cancel 30 days before reservation.

I have run into places that you will be charged for 1 day and that is not refundable any time

I've had some places that were willing to move the reservation to a different date in lieu of cancelling and losing the deposit.

I have to give a shout out. Last week over Christmas, we reserved 3 nights at the Vineyards on Grapevine Lake. We pulled in there on Christmas afternoon with our 5th wheel and tow vehicle. They had been booked up but had two different sites that fit our schedule perfectly. We left the next morning to trade the 5th wheel and F350 for our new to us 2007 MADP. We returned that afternoon with the MADP and stayed the night of 26th. We decided we wanted to head home the next day, since we were bare bones and no Toad, fully expecting to forfeit our last night. We left and told them that the site was available. A couple days later, we had a refund on our credit card (totally unexpected). This may not be the way it always works out, but this was my experience at this particular RV Park.

We stayed there for 5 days in 2010 and that doesn't surprise me. Great place and great volunteers that run it.

A business transaction is exactly that. In Scottybdivin's case, the CG management went beyond the scope of the transaction in the spirit of goodwill.

I was fully aware that we would lose the 50 buck's, sucks but that's life.
I guess I was surprised that there was no response at all.
Happy New Year,
Tim

Did you cancel via email, phone, or in person? When I can't make it on a date I had reserved, I've gotten good results by calling, explaining the situation, and ask to move the reservation to a different date. I haven't been turned down (at least not yet).

Did you call or do it via the impersonal email method? We had to cancel due to a change in plans at one CG. I gave them a call and had a nice chat with the lady on the other end. I was told that we were inside the cancellation window but they would try to refund our deposit if they could rerent the site. I watched my CC statement and yep, it did show up as a refund. Sometimes we have to give some customer service on our end as well. Have we gone to that CG since - regrettably no as our campers have grown from a 27' TT to a 33' 5er and now a 38' 5er and just too dang big.

Two years ago we had a reservation at the "best" CG in Estes Park. A few days before our scheduled arrival the road into Estes Park was wiped out by flooding. A lot of the town was flooded. The water system was contaminated requiring boiling. Power was out in various areas and the mayor had ordered a voluntary evacuation. I called the CG, which took several days to get hold of, and told them I was cancelling based on conditions. They said I would have to pay but I could rebook later. I argued they were not able to provide the services they agreed for my fees and I just wanted a refund. They refused. I asked about the rebooking and they said I could come back anytime in 12 mos, if they weren't oversold. I told them I live a thousand miles away and wasn't sure I could visit in 12 mos. I said I just wanted a refund because my visit days were still a few days away. They said they were losing a lot of business...duh. I ended up disputing the charges via my credit card company. There's one CG I will never visit.

There's a trick to this.
When cancelling on short notice, and you are offered a date in the future with no loss/forfieture, go ahead and make the reservation - at least 60 to 90 days out. Then call back week later, and cancel that reservation, without loss, as you are now cancelling with PLENTY of prior notice. ;^)

Thanks,
I keep thinking of a way to get out of here but here I sit. The tanks are full but that will only get me 500-600 miles South, maybe the end of the month. Thank Heavens for lower gas prices.
Keep Warm,
Tim
