I reported aboard the Coast Guard Cutter CAPE ROMAIN, homeported in Ketchikan, AK just months after the quake. Got to see quite a bit of the damage caused, it was a powerful quake. Created a lot of changes - a new island was formed in Woman's Bay (Kodiak); several pinnacle rock formations underwater were created, causing major challenges to vessel navigation, and much more.

I know my Dad was there. We were in Portland. He was at Ft Richardson. Said the whole section of 1st ave just dropped.

In 1967 he was stationed at Ft Wainwright in Fairbanks and I was there then. We had one that hit that was over 7points.

I remember waking up, Was asleep on a roll away bed upstairs in Quarters. The floors were hardwood so the bed just bounced off the walls.

After we woke we all scrambled to get outside to the Ice rinks that were in the fields behind the housing units. They were rebar reinforced and they would flood them in the fall to ice skate on. They had us gather there cause less chance of ground splitting.

Didn't have much to worry about there because of the perma frost.
To top that off, we had a major flood a month or so later. Rained for a week and a half then the dike broke on the Chena river and everything flooded.

I was up there in 1966 two years after. We were near the Anchorage bay (Earthquake Park, then) where they were piling mound after mound of debris, still. Looking out on the bay at low tide there was a monstrous crack in the floor of the bay...appearing to be bottomless and maybe 100 yes wide that extended from near the high tide shore across the mud flats and to the ocean. I remember thinking how could this crack in the surface of the earth be so wide and deep and not filled in. I can still see that picture in my mind. I was 14 on a Scout trip to the Alaskan Centennial.
