Alaska Earthquake 1964
Who remembers the big quake that hit Alaska 50 years ago today. 27 Mar 1964.
I was in Anchorage on that Good Friday when hell broke loose. It was a big shake I will never forget.

I was at Fort Lenard Wood in basic training when we first heard about it.

I was starting my last quarter at Auburn before embarking on a 38 year career with the DoD. I would see the remaining damage when I traveled to Anchorage for the Air Force around '70.

I can remember it being in the news, but my first trip up there was in 1984. There was nothing left of the damage by then.

I remember the incident well, can't remember exactly where I was when I heard the news first. But I was living in San Diego and I remember well the stories of the tidal surge expected all up and down the California Coast. As I recall Arcata California was hit pretty significantly.

I arrived in Alaska in 1970 and there was still some remnants of the Quake in Anchorage. I was on my way to Eielson AFB in Fairbanks. The devastation in Valdez was just incredible.
While was in college at Bowling Green we also had the Palm Sunday tornadoes that hit Toledo. That was in the mid-60's.

I remember the cover to cover photos of the devastation in LIFE magazine and couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Hubby was born and raised in Crescent City, CA. He remembers the tsunami well, as it destroyed the harbor and about 1/4 of the town. He was 10.

The DW was in Alaska and remembers them driving down the road and it felt like they were on water in a boat, being bounced around. They were in Delta Junction at the time, so one can imagine the force that it had. I got here in Jan of 1970 and the damage was still apparent from this event.

Around 89 or 90 we toured the redwood lumber mill in Scotia. They had marks showing the high water level from the tidal surge, it was over our heads.
