Amazon, is it really new?

I've bought a couple of things from Amazon that due to packaging felt that maybe it isn't new, perhaps refurb or something else.
I know Amazon sells refurbed and used stuff, but I'm talking about something you bought thinking it was new.

Anyone else feel the same way?

Sometimes, the page with the item on it will say "3 Used & New from $XX". You usually know if you're getting used because the price would be lower than the new price.

I bought some battery operated candles from Amazon but there was no indication they were used, at least not in the price I paid. When I got them, they were clearly returned from a prior purchaser. How did I know? The box inside the box still had the shipment label on it from the prior purchaser & one of the candles had a sticky note attached to it with "broken" written on it.

I ripped the seller a new one for reshipping returned mdse without inspecting it. I was overnighted a new set, included a pre-paid label to return the other set & received an apology. Although I was satisfied with the outcome, I did enter a review for the product to alert future buyers that the seller ships returned/damaged mdse & to carefully inspect what they receive from them.

Yes, I'm starting to shop around at more reputable stores.

I just ordered a Samsung SmartThings hub from Best Buy. Amazon had it for sale but due to my previous experience decided Best Buy at the same price would get me a new one not the possibility of a returned one recycled to me.

While I have yet to receive a used/returned item from AMAZON, I do know from reading their 1 and 2 star reviews that it happens. It can be returned if it's an AMAZON item at no cost. If one of their sellers - maybe. I recently returned a defective item to a vendor at no cost but the refund wasn't credited until they received it, 6-7 days later instead of immediately as a Prime member after handed over to UPS. Refubished items - ya takes ya chances there. My NIKON P&S camera was brand new but a last years left over model and about half price

While amazon warehouses and ships products in many cases the manufacturers or actual retailer are the ones actually shipping.
Read carefully the description of the product. Notify amazon if it isnít as advertised.
I think itís a mix a of of few vendors not being honest and customers not clearly reading the posting descriptions

Well if it's used or returned or refurbished it should clearly state so. I have bought one refurbished item from Amazon and I knew it before pressing the "order now" button.

I ordered and paid the new price on a Netgear MiFi unit that came packaged with printing on the box that made me believe that it did not come new from Netgear. I have no proof other than my intuition.

Bought a keypad deadbolt lock from Amazon, brand new. Received it, original packaging, and inside was a VERY used keypad lock, rusted and unusable. Notified Amazon, they stated I should never have accepted it. I told them it was left on my doorstep, how could I have refused it? They said work it out with Seller, and let them know if I had any problems! I contacted the Seller, they said they only sell new, how do they know that I wasn't the one to put the used lock in the original box?

Disputed with my credit card company. Reason was that I never received what I had ordered. Immediate refund, never heard another word from Seller or Amazon. Kept the junk lock around for maybe 6 months before I finally threw out just in case they came back at me for a return.

Really disappointed, as I've returned items before through Amazon and NEVER had a problem . . .

A friend of mine who works at an Amazon Fulfillment Center said the best time to call Amazon with a problem is early in the morning, like 2:00 am, since the calls are all handled overseas. He said that the offshore operators will give away the whole shop, you just need to climb up one to two levels to a senior supervisor!

For what it's worth.

Just returned two very nice lamps that were crunched inside the original packaging

Received two more and one had slight base damage that I repaired

I check Ebay and other sites often and prices can be lower on the same item

Like some others touched on there are items sent right from Amazon and then items sent by a seller other than Amazon.

I am a prime member so I always select Prime and that means fulfillment by Amazon.

If it's an item sold by Amazon and its returned opened it bnb usually goes to a third party liquidation firm. People can buy large lots from Amazon, Home Depot etc and resell.

Returns on Amazon are very easy. If you think that it was used and put back in a box go to the page select returns and pick the right item.

All in all there is a reason Amazon is taking over. I get 1 to 2 day shipping for free, returns are free unless I simply do not want it anymore. It's the future...

Yes I love the quick shipping but not at the expense of getting something that is less than expected.

I do believe most everything Amazon sends is as expected, just not everything, as others have verified.

I hope this is not a trend Amazon is taking or perhaps their over watch is reduced, I do like the convenience of Amazon.

As for me I will be shopping and comparing at other reputable retailers.

Amazon is typically meticulous about returns but it's not flawless. YouTube is full of re-sellers who buy large bins of returns from Amazon so you know that they are not designating them to be re-sold. I think they do that out of caution. A used item should be clearly labelled that you're buying a used item along with the condition of the item.

Amazon also has packaging requirements to reduce consumer frustration with opening packages which is why you rarely see sealed clam shell packaging with fulfillment by Amazon. Some people might confuse that with a re-packaged item even though it is new.

Items from other sellers should be clearly labelled. If they aren't, that's on them but I would think that Amazon would want to know that they are doing that.

I have had very good customer experience with Amazon correcting problems. One also involved a fraud case. I will keep ordering from Amazon. But also, now check Walmart. Am finding as good or better pricing on occasion.

This is one of the cons of buying online, Amazon and the seller should check the quality product before shipping it out. Good thing they have great customer service when things mess-up.
