Here in Illinois, the "Land of Lincoln Corruption", they started charging sales tax last January. You don't actually think Springfield would pass up an opportunity to soak the taxpayer even more, do you?
Even with now paying sales tax, Amazon is still my preferred retailer, especially with Amazon Prime two-day shipping. I don't trust eBay, the deals don't seem as good as they used to and most sellers seem to charge outrageous amounts for shipping. And good luck trying to return something. With Amazon it's seamless.
My only beef with Amazon is that it's nearly impossible to talk to a human if you have an issue; they make you go through their automated pull-down menus for customer service, which can be frustrating. But I've only had to contact them about a problem once or twice and each time it was resolved successfully.

That is what I always find funny about the "level playing field" side. Would it not be better for no sales tax? That would "level the playing field."

Next time you have an issue with Amazon, try using their email feature. We got great customer service this way and they contacted us immediately after receiving our message. Amazon is great to us. So many stores do not stock items anymore and you must buy them online anyway.

You pay sales tax if Amazon has a warehouse in your State but the way to avoid paying tax is to purchase from one of the Amazon marketplace vendors who also offer the product you are buying. The top several vendors are listed below the header Other Sellers on Amazon and the entire list is displayed by clicking on the "new" and "used" links.

Sometimes the item you are buying isn't stocked by Amazon at all; when that happens the main listing will say "sold by". Quite often in those cases Amazon still does the "fulfillment" so you may not realize you are buying from a vendor, but you won't be paying the sales tax.
