I've got a feeling that most of us would not be too keen on paying the taxes that Canadians pay.

Don't believe the border is to keep Canadians out but to keep riff raff sneaking in and coming down to do bad.Other than that we don't need no stinking border I.ve got relatives in P.E.I. from the 1940s. Wish I knew them.

I think maybe we still need the border for if nothing else the security and well being of all canines in the usa. This was my conclusion after a usa border guard dumped our pooches dog food :(

Canadian Snowbird Association ; along with officials in the snowbird states ; is lobbying for a " Retired Canadian Visa " that will allow for stays without some of the restrictions now in place.
For now , just don't have money in a US bank , savings account ; any interest earned will bring you to the attention of the IRS, and file form #8840 every spring, keep track of every time you cross the border and your length of stay.

as long as u don't stay longer than 182 days in any 12 month period and don't earn any income in the usa you have nothing to worry about
there is no 120 day deal at all
If your in the us for your full allotted time(182 days) you must file a form 8840 and send it to a IRS office in texas
what that is( 8840) is your declaring your a Canadian with a Canadian passport and all your income is derived in canada and that your residence is also there
you have to attach a copy of your tax return also
its not a big deal at all.the test is a bit convoluted thogh see below
Substantial Presence Test You are considered a U.S. resident if you meet the substantial presence test for 2016. You meet this test if you were physically present in the United States for at least: • 31 days during 2016 and • 183 days during the period 2016, 2015, and 2014, counting all the days of physical presence in 2016 but only 1/3
the number of days of presence in 2015 and only 1/6 the number of days in 2014.
