Yes sir, it was only about the news with him. His political leanings never came out until well after he retired. But the way he conducted himself on-air, you never knew his personal feelings or opinions. That gave him 100% credibilty as a news reporter in my book. That's rare theese days.

He did make his political views known during Vietnam. He publicly stated he was against this "police action". Lady Bird said he was a wonderful man; even though he was responsible for Pres. Johnson falling out of favor.
He even made a statement after death. He knocked Michael the molester out of the news. Wonder if there will ever be another reporter close to as good as Walter?

I was a little too young to remember him reporting on Vietnam, but in a retrospective on his career they did show him reporting on the end of the war, "ending in a stalemate" and you could see how disgusted he was with it all.

I was talking more about seeing him tooling around on his boat with Bill Clinton during the time Mr. Clinton was having his problems. I remember how shocked I was because of all the years I watched him give the news, I had no idea he leaned so far to the left.

He was vigorously anti-war and promoted our running like cowards no matter whether we won, lost or left our allies in the lurch. It now has been shown that we had NV on the ropes but we let them off the hook.

We are seeing some rewriting of history.

Thank you Hamguy,Somebody knows history here!It was uncle walter who in early 1968, went on the almighty TV,the place where the lords of truth, tell us what to do and how to do it,told us we were beaten and should walk away.Never mind that the Victor Charlies ceased to exist, and the NVA were desimated, and good old General Giap said it was time to talk.BUT,when he heared walt,he knew he had us on the run.

Click the link for another (Positive) Orbit on Walter
Ham Guy, you epically should click.

And Whaler.. You are mistaken, the VC still do exist, and NVA is still there.. Today..

No war is won on the battlefield.. and the leaders we have today don't have what it takes to win a war any more, They fight to a stalemate at best, Thus we still have NVA and SVA and N&S Korea ... The closest thing we have to a win is Saddam, and we are turning that back over to the natives so again we are surrendering.

Walter was right, Still is.

Here is some reading material for you wa8yxm, it's a 'Vintage book' from Random house. The name of the book is,"A Viet Cong Memoir" by Truong Nhu Tang.He was the minister of justice for the VC in COSVN.Maybe you can believe him when he says that after Tet of 1968,the VC were done.Killed in the offensive.

Hey guys can we limit our conversation to Walter? The VC and NVA are a footnote in this guys brilliant career.

I also put up the 40 Years Ago post next to this one.

Right on DriVer! Mr. Cronkite was arguably the best TV reporter ever. He told it like it was. Today's TV "reporters" more closely resemble his opposite. They tell us what they want us to hear.
