Another Tax Season Done

Ahh, so we put the finishing touches on another tax season. It sure doesn't get any easier and now with the new health care law thrown in for 2014 it will be just a total joy.

I'm amazed that there are still some folks who think that a tax refund is a gift from the government. Unless you're in one of those low brackets, it's their own money. There are also those folks that think I can control their refund or what they owe. Sorry, but I don't write the laws and I have to obey the laws. They have a term for those that go outside of the law....that term is 3 to 5 with time off for good behavior.

Now to get the RV out of storage and cleaned up for camping season.

You mean you do not now have to deal with all of the folks that waited to the last minute and file and extension and they wait until the end to finally file again?

If someone waited until today to get their stuff to us we will happily hand them an extension. We actually cut off our appointments on the fifth to catch up what we have in here. It does get hectic today just chasing e-file forms so that people don't get hit with failure to file penalties.

One of the funniest (to me, anyway) cartoons I'd ever seen was in the Wall Street Journal. Two inmates talking in their cell and one says to the other, "in accounting, it's best to think inside the box."

We cut off on April 1. It still amazes me how many people come in on April 1. And then there are the ones who walk in today and say I didn't forget you. I wish they would at times. I don't know why I care but I do.
Happy April 15th.
Let's go camping

Judy, to paraphrase the old statement, "Never underestimate the ignorance of the American taxpayer." So many seem to think we just can take their numbers and make it come out a certain way and I'm always amazed at those that have zero consideration for what we do and the knowledge it requires. I still enjoy it though at times I wonder why.

Dave, I'm down to my last two years of working full time. Right now we are out in Michigan looking at colleges for my twins. We've been looking for schools for them for the better part of the last year and I'm still suffering from massive sticker shock. Now I understand why colleges are so concerned about taking care of the poor......because they sure make enough of us poor!

I am just glad that I made it through another year! This one has been tougher than the last. So many more clients owed tax this year and were surprised about it even though we sent out client letters last year saying watch out, prepare, be smart about your withholding, etc. We have a few days off then head right back into the mountain of extended returns back in the racks. Ugh....

When folks learn I was ATC they say that must be a very stressful job. I tell them you have to have the right mentality for it and if you do it is fun. Working for the government has been more stressful than working the planes. but I always...ALWAYS say that...

"I would rather work a lot of planes on a busy, thunderstorm day than be a tax accountant on April 15th!"

Really, that is what I have said for 30+ years. I finally get to break THAT rut! LOL

We ALWAYS owe, never a refund. I'm not giving Uncle Sam an interest free loan. It's MY money & he'll get it when I'm darned good & ready to give it to him....or April 15th - which ever comes first.

Mel we had the same thing happen to our clients. We warned them about the new taxes, change in rates, and the loss of deductions, but it still didn't matter. So many owed and many owed a LOT of money. Some even hit six figures still owed after withholding and estimated tax paid.

And just think about the new healthcare l;aw added into the mix, Kind of makes us want to move up that retirement date!

Being a retired CPA, I understand the 4/15 thingy. But since 80% of Americans should not be part of the ACA, how does that effect tax returns? What am I missing?
