A good resource for this topic as well as all things financial is ClarkHoward.com

Since my credit application was denied twice, whether or not the wife was listed as an authorized user, I'm afraid I can't answer that question honestly. Either Equifax and Esperian waited the full 3 days before thawing my reports, or the fact Trans Union was going to charge for the thaw and I refused to pay for it but I could only wait 2 days (hoping the one selected by Lowes would thaw in 15 minutes) before my final filing for a new Lowes credit card application in order to qualify for their rebate on my new washer/dryer and it was still refused.

I applied for the thaw 1/20/15 for 8 days figuring that would be plenty of time for my credit card application and just today (1/26/15) received a letter from Equifax that the freeze had been temporaily lifted for the following time period: 1/20/15-1/27/15. So for a thaw a person needs to allow plenty of time to know for sure it has been done. Next time I'll used at least 14 days, and plan further ahead, which this time was unavoidable due to the special sales period Lowe's was having.
