Auto Renewal

More and more I have run into things with "auto-renewal".

When I sign up for something I always check to make sure
they DO NOT tick the box. Lately, I have been receiving
notices thanking me for signing up for AR. I have been forced
into calling, being put on hold for 30 minutes, and they say
they will uncheck the box. My wife went to a store today
and they asked her if she wanted a card so she could get
discounts. At the till, she was told she had to sign for the card.
She looked at it and she saw they wanted $25 for the card.
The second line said she was also agreeing to AR. She walked out.

We found out our vehicle insurance was also on AR. Long discussion
around that also.

Good Sam has started this and I have had to call them several times.

What is it with these people?????

Due to the fact that a large number of the buying public....just does not pay attention, and have no idea they are enrolled in Auto Renewal.
Sneaky....but it works.

There's no cost for renewal notices, so it probably saves them a bunch of money. And there's no downside for the business.

If they auto renew, and the customer wants it, all's good.
If they auto renew, and the customer doesn't want it, the onus is still on the customer to get it corrected.

On the other hand, if they send out renewal notices, the customer will have a chance to think it over.

I'm not fond of it either and don't accept it when offered. If I miss one, I'll notice it on the credit card bill and cancel. And I don't call; I email or use their contact page for a written record. So far, so good.

If they don't have your credit card number on file, they can't make you pay even if they say you are on Auto Renewal!

My SiriusXM account is that way. Every year I get an invoice from them at more than double what I normally pay. I just ignore it and let the renewal date pass. Then I call them and get it renewed at the 1/2 price it should have been to start with!

When you call them.....do you pay with a credit card?
If so, it is on file

I do pay with a credit card but insist that they do not keep it on file. So far that has worked fine. My subscription expired Dec 10th and about a month before that I got the usual double-price invoice. I just ignored it. Yesterday I received an e-mail from them that due to non-payment my service would be cut off in 48 hours. I will call them today and I'm confident I will get the old price!
