Banner ads, does anybody notice them?

While it's the furthest thing from my intentions to say anything bad about the banner ads here, after all it's what makes this great forum free for folks like us, but ........

It occurred to me, mostly because of the way my brains wired, that some of them come as just downright funny others ironic.

When I logged in just now and saw the top banner ad all I could think of was "Really? Do they really think they're getting their moneys worth on that one?"

It was an ad for Holiday Inn.

Do they really think there's a lot of people on an RV forum looking for hotel rooms?

Maybe they're reading all the posts about various break-downs and just figured they'd cover all the bases?

The ads themselves are not placed by this forum, nor most other web sites using banner advertising. They get paid for the space on web pages but the actual ads are supplied by advertising companies... Doubleclick.net being one of the most common but there's many others.

Look at the bottom line of your browser when a page is loading and you'll see (briefly) where various components of that page are coming from. Also, hit the refresh button and you'll likely see different ads each time. They aren't different because the webmaster is furiously typing new code each time - lol - but because a different ad is being "served up" each time.

Targeted ads would be better of course, but they are less frequently used.

Agreed, a Holiday Inn ad on an RV web forum is not going to get too many clicks!
(unless of course it's for a Holiday Inn Express; those make you smarter )

I use Google Chrome with the extension 'Ad Block' so I don't see most ads. The only ones that get thru are the small ones down the right column. First time I signed on using another browser, I was startled by all the ads!

Huh? We stay at Holiday Inns all the time. We just drive our MH because it's roomy and comfy driving hotel to hotel.

If you'll notice, most of the ad's content are almost always directly related to the topic or content of the thread. If the thread content is about shocks, you will sometimes see ads for shocks.
