It is nice to celebrate and recognize an all American form of music, sometime we should venture into jazz New Orleans style.
But how can we pick the "best" it is so subjective?
Not that it is important however; because each of these songs speaks to us individally based on our experience or our hopes and dreams, what we hear in the lyrics and the delivery of the artist is personal and meaningful which is why we listen and retain the memory.
These are American poets and bards; modern day and historic. They tell of the American experience (The City of New Orleans) they leave nothing out (Husbands and Wives) , they cause us to weep in sadness (He stopped loving her today) and joy (Take this job and shove it). We identify with the saddness (Don't take your love to town) and rejoice at the kindness (England Swings) and generosity, the humor (Dang me) , the irony (Momma don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys). We celebrate our freedoms through their lyrics "God Bless The USA". We learn of our history (The Battle of New Orleans). It goes on and on and it is bonified born and bred in the USA.
You know a person could go to Nashville and pick 75 unemployed musicians at random off the street, ask them to pick an instrument, put them in a concert hall and in about 20 minutes they would be playing philharmonic music from sheet music. Then you could break them out in groups and they could play jazz, rock and roll, hip hop, blues you name it they are that good.
This is a feel good thread if there ever was one.
Thanks for asking.

Nice post njs42.
When it comes to country, my taste runs to sad or dark and it's hard to argue with He stopped loving her today. Others I like are: Sunday morning coming down. Poncho and lefty by Emmy Lou Harrris or Merle and Willie, Kern River by Merle, Whiskey Lullaby by Brad and Allison, It's only make believe by Conway, Ghost riders in the sky by Johnny, My woman my wife by Marty and the list goes on. I seldom listen to the stuff they call country today. This is an interesting thread and has brought to mind several songs I haven't thought of in a while. Thanks

I have always heard that if you play country music backwards........
Your wife/girlfriend will love you again,
Your pickup truck will start running,
And your dog will come home..........

Sequimguy I like it:
Add trains, prison, momma, and beer; and you just posted the handbook for country music.

I like all that have been mention so far but I could listen over and over to:
"Last Date" by Floyd Cramer
Yes, although this is instrumental it is still classified as country music.
