I do not make light of the issue. But urge you all to be prepared, as such things will never end.

My FCU has caught this type of fraud many times for me. Mostly happens while traveling, which is now always. The FCU freezes my card, calls me, verifies the fraud, cancels the card, negates the fraudulent bill, issues new cards. I have never had to pay for any fraudulent use, nor had any fees. It happens about once every 3 years.

My FCU knows my buying habbits and trends, and follows my travels. They have caught the small trial buys, the purchases in cities I am not at, etc.

I limit my exposure by always using my debit card, as more than the balance cannot be taken. I never use an ATM. I get extra cash during regular transactions.

Just because a few of these criminals got caught, and the local news sensationalized it, does not prevent more fraud, but it does get you to watch the news and their commercials.

I have not had a chipped card in years, but when I did I would smash the chip with a hammer on my bench-vice. The card could still be swiped but the chip was rendered useless. Not all merchants are set up for RFD chip reading so the magnetic strip is still on the card.

Works for me - smashing the chip.

Like Dave, my FCU will call me when I'm traveling and through an automatic response from my phone I can verify that I made the purchase. Knock on wood, so far when traveling we have been safe.

One time on another bank card, the bank called and asked if i had just made a gas purchase in some other state and I said that I didn't. They revoked the card and sent me another one. Only time ever affected - knock on wood.

It is very real! I got skimmed in line making a purchase at a grocery store. Then I got a call about a large purchase of computers and IPods since I had set a limit per purchase on my card with the cc company. The store caught the person right at the counter. Yea! I since bought a shielded wallet. Helps but won't stop the thieves using other methods. Just be careful as much as possible.

I thought that's what I said, the aluminum foil blocks the radiation=RF signal.
