Been concerned about this myself. Two years ago I had a medical emergency, the EMT's carried me to the hospital. Got back a week later. It was awhile before I realised my home had been enterred and things taken. Several firearms mostly. I got lucky - they took basically what two guys could carry on foot. Had they had a truck they could have cleaned me out. So I am certain it was neighbors seeing me being hauled off knowing it would be a few days before I got back. My motorcycle chain had been cut and the bike was parked in front of the open-faced garage I had it in - the locked forks defeated them trying to roll it away. Got VERY lucky there!
I increased security and have the remaining firearms in concealed storage. Motion sensor lights and alarms. Bike is double cable locked with disk locks and motion sensor alarm. Still need to get some cameras up and windows/doors better secured. Looking into an online system to keep track of the cameras by cellphone.
I am in a suburb that has 'low-rents' and other questionable types nearby. New neighbors that I haven't talked with yet, so don't yet trust them.

I stop newspapers, and mail. I have a monitored alarm system which is always armed. I notify my neighbors as well as our police dept. Multiple timers for different lights in the house. I used to have an old TV with a mechanical power switch. That used to be on a timer that ran from 6 to 11:00pm makes it seem like someone is home. Alas it wore out.

We lucked out sounding from other Posters, I have lived here 58 years 2 others been here 20+ years and a couple 10 years. Most others have been here at least 5 years. When we leave I'm worried a little bit till I get to the CG and then forget about it. Have great insurance and the rest I leave up too ADT they also monitor Fire, smoke, and a panic button.

Fear

Besides other security items in place we post this on the slider going out into our back yard when we're away. They sell them at Habor Frieght. Makes the crack heads think twice. If they can read that is. :-)

We have all the above mentioned items + a daughter and a SIL that are at the house daily (business reasons). + we have hurricane shutters on all the windows and garage doors. They close and lock from the inside. This does advertise the house is not occupied, but to get through these shutters would require a considerable amount of tools, effort, time and noise. Thieves will look for an easier target.

Thanks to all for your input. We do have an alarm, and a couple neighbors to check on things. Also have a great insurance policy, so I guess we'll find out. Will also do the times lights idea, and maybe a radio to play at night to make a little noise, as you say, most TV's cannot be turned on by a timer.

And Bob, Don't forget to call the local law and let them know to do a drive by. We live in a very tight nit area and the local cops are the best. As for Insurance Coverage, for what its worth and as some fun with my agent, I called him once when we were about to head out for a trip and said, hey, just to let you know, we will be on vacation for x amount of days. He says and? Well i'm paying you guys for protection of my belongings i expect you to watch over them while i'm away. I don't think he found it too funny, but i sure got a hoot of it and i'll bet someone from the company drove by to check the house anyway! All I can say, just go, have a good time and what ever happens, happens!

The Home Security Superstore - Fake Camera - Motion & LED by Meridian Point (SC-12/2082) - Home Surveillance Products Online

I have five of these mounted around my house. Also notify all the neighbors when we are gone.

I wouldn't store my rig at at storage yard. We had to for a year when our house was being built and our coach got broken into while it was there.

Have been broken into twice, they all went to jail. Also you should take a video of your home with all cabinets open, had more problems with insurance the then crooks

Many years ago we had a house that was vacant for several months and 200 miles away from us. It was not in a very nice area and we were concerned about break ins. I set the tv and inside lamps on timers .They would come on at sunset and go off around midnight. Never had any problems. Probably just lucky.

Several years ago as we pulled out of the neighborhood we passed one of the neighborhood punks. Got home to a kicked in back door. cleaned us out, even got the wife's wedding rings as she had gained weight and had them off to be resized. Couldn't prove who did it so we were just SOL

The OP didn't really ask for advice just comments. My comment is that I keep my TT inside a machine shed on my farm and in the area where I live I don't even lock my doors. There is no crime and even if there was I'm half mile from my nearest neighbor. That flimsy little lock on the flimsy frame of the flimsy pre hung door isn't going to stop anybody anyway.

Burglar alarms are great. They notify the burglar that while they rob your house that you have an alarm. Burglar works quickly as the alarm is annoying. The cops come by later and turn off your alarm. They write a report that a burglar attacked your house. You are on vacation 1,000miles away. Never heard a thing, until you were notified.

All of the above, ALSO if you do not have a lawn care service, hire the neighbor kid to mowe the lawn and water. Also ask your neighbor to park their car in your driveway instead of on the street.
You could also use these: Dummy Dome Security Camera with LED
