British Country Music

Country music is almost non-existing in Europe, so we make do with some Cockney entertainment. Any good or a load of cobblers? This one is not exactly new - more like a classic.

Try this one.

Well I built my life around you, did what I thought was right.
But you never cared about me, now Ive seen the light.
Oh darling, there aint no pleasin you.

You seemed to think that everything I ever did was wrong.
I should have known it, all along.
Oh darlin, there aint no pleasin you.

You only ad to say the word,
And you knew Id do it.
You ad me where you wanted me,
But you went and blew it.

Now everything I ever done, was only done for you.
But now you can go and do, just what you wanna do,
Im tellin you.

Coz I aint gonna be made to look a fool no more,
You done it once too often, what do ya take me for?
Oh darlin, there aint no pleasin you.

And you seemed to think that everything I ever did was wrong.
I should ave known it all along,
That darlin, there aint no pleasin you.

Now if you think I dont mean what I say, and Im only bluffin.
You got another thing comin, Im tellin you that for nothin.
Coz darlin Im leavin,
Thats what Im gonna...do-oo-oo

Look for recordings by "The Wurzels". Their stuff is mainly UK west country (Devon and Cornwall, with some Somerset) and is a real hoot, though a lot of it is full of sexual double-meanings (not suitable for young children).

As an example, one song is about a shelter in a small village for bus passengers to wait. The chorus goes:

What do we want with a light?
In the dark we can manage alright.
If they'd had one when all our Dads were young men
Most of us wouldn't be here tonight.

Doesn't sound much like any Country and western I have heard. Sounds like some cross over music from the old 60's Rock-n-Roll.

Next time y'all are over here, you need to get to Billy Bob's in Forth Worth or head down to Luckenbach, TX.

I love Lonnie Donegan stuff, and "Bawdy Songs and Back Room Ballads" [sp.] by a chap named ?? Brand, IIRC.

It may not be traditional country, but it beats the H out of alot of the crap on radio nowadays.
