My parents are looking to buy a class C Motorhome for $64,000.

I will be in the market for one in a year or so.

However, since I could use one now for a few trips here and there I'm thinking about going in halves with them on this one...

My only concern is that they will be traveling with their pets and they let them sleep on the couch, bed, etc...

Has anyone ever setup a partnership to buy an RV? How did that work out?

On the plus side - it seems it would be a good idea since neither of us will be full timing - so, we would get more use out of it rather than letting it sit.

Even with family , this sounds , like a big argument waiting to happen . Sorry just had to say it . If you or yours have pet allergies , it could take longer to clean the RV for your use than your actual time away. Then there's the lead time for arrangements and the un-expected trips. It is a compromise and we all know how well they work.
It broke down on your trip what do you mean I owe half ?
Sit back and think it out . JMHO the negatives out weigh any positives.
If you need an RV , before your ready to buy ; rent. Safer.

I do not know your family works out, but I told the wife no when her brother asked to go in halfs with one he was buying. We did not for the same reasons that Skip mentioned, other than we had the dog.

It was a good thing we did not....

I guess it depends on the family. I myself would never do it, I figure if I want something i'll buy my own. But I see a lot of other family's that don't seem to mind using each others stuff all the time. I think it's a problem waiting to happen but that's just me.

It all depends on your family dynamics.

If you can work out ALL the details, without arguments, go for it.

That being said, we went half in on a boat with my parents. It worked.

Buying an rv is a business deal. Never mix business with friends or relatives.

It wouldn't work in my family, though a simple loan of cash wouldn't be a problem amongst us. The RV isn't just the financial minefield but endless issues or how it should be maintained and used. As you already said you know the dogs will trash it in your eyes, and they will be no problem in your folks eyes.

I suppose I'd do it if it meant I could never do it in my own, but I'd have to constantly remind myself that I knew I was signing up for the aggravation that is sure to follow. I'd avoid it if there was ANY other way to do the deal v

No, not only no, but absolutely no, and not only absolutely no, but HELL NO. I have one very stringent code that I'll never change. NEVER, as in absolutely never do business with ANY relative. Business implies any financial dealings, partnerships, transactions, sales or trades of any type or kind. The one with the money will get screwed and that usually will be the parents....regardless. If I were your parent, I'd tell you "no thanks" !

Not a good venture for numerous reasons. Why not let them purchase it and then work out an arrangement to "rent" it for your use. Make rental agreement rock solid if anything goes wrong while you rent it,, you will haave it repaired.

Generally not a good idea. In your post you already give one reason, pets. Generally it goes downhill from there.

NO! I like the renting arrangement for sharing. But, .... The old adage, neither a lender nor a borrower be is my rule. Lost my oil filter wrench. I know my good friend had one one but went to the store and bought a new one anyway. Maybe that is why we're still good friends after all these many years.
