I live in Big Bear, in the middle of the San Bernardino National Forest. Across the Lake on the North Shore is Forest land and there are about 100 of these lease cabins and in Boulder Bay, west south shore, about 100 more. Still n existence, still used. There are many more throughout the forest. Chris Dorner was holed up, shot and the cabin he was holed up in in an inholding. This area is surrounded by lease cabins 8 miles or so south of me.

Same here. Friends parents had one on the Rio Grande River near Crede, CO. It's was a rough and difficult ranch road to get in, then all of a sudden there was a community of 1/2 dozen cabins. They were on a 99 years lease. It was very cool to say the least.

A few decades ago I had a chance to buy 80 acres + all building, totally surrounded by NF. Sounded good until I discovered it was over 50 miles to the nearest electricity, or anything.

Private cabins on Public Land can cause intense jealousy, and feeling of "entitlement by the few".
That's what happened here in Southern California's Crystal Cove. Prime beachfront cabins located on public land were passed from generation to generation and sold for millions of dollars when they did sell, (strictly by word-of-mouth to "insiders"). The residents steadfastly kept out "people of color" and "undesirables", and that's what ultimately led to their downfall. Now the general public can rent the house-cabins on ReserveAmercia.com!
There are many cabins in the Angeles National Forest that have been there for many years. And strangely/ironically enough, the new and recent VERY wealthy Chinese immigrants who own the majority of land at the foothills, (Santa Anita, El Sereno, Arcadia, Pasadena), are doing their best to swoop in and purchase all of the quaint old cabins in the forest as they become available!
