Camping and railroads

Ok, here goes. I love camping and I love watching trains. Anyone know of a cg that is next to good mainline? I know most would want away from that but I am seeking spot.

Thanks

A search came up with THIS older thread. It might have some ideas for you.

I love trains too, especially steam engine trains. I was taking close up pictures of The Durbin Rocket in WV & got the bejeebers scared out of me when the steam whistle blew. I was right under it...MAN that thing was loud.

How is it one careless match can start a forest fire but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

Any place in New Orleans has all the trains you want. The best we encountered was in Seligman,AZ on old Route 66. I think it is KOA now. When we checked in the owner gave me a key chain that said...You survived the night of a thousand trains. They rumble East and West, 24/7 and are long and slow. They built a bridge so no whistles, but you don't seem to need them, the trains make enough noise.

I prefer waterside spots where I can watch barges go by. Much quieter. North Little Rock Riverside and Tom Sawyer in West Memphis, AR come to mind.

Out by Williamsburg VA you see huge cuts of coal and shipping trains. I thing the CG is Anvil.

Just wait until the 1950 N&W 611 J Class steam locomotive is finally refurbished and you can come to VA and ride on a train pulled by one of the fastest steam locomotives every built. Originally built in Roanoke, VA. It is sleek, powerful and fast. I think it is supposed to be ready by 2016 and they will have excursions.

ooooooh, where'll that be, Gary?

I'm also waiting on the Durbin washed-out part to get fixed so it'll meet up with the Cass line. Years ago the river flooded & took out a huge section of the Durbin tracks. Volunteers have been working bit-by-bit to clear the debris/years of overgrowth & fix the tracks. Once it's complete, you'll be able to ride the Rocket into Cass, then hop on a Shay to Bald Knob . I've already told Mark @Pegasus Farm CG I'll be back when the lines meet up.

The KOA in Cloquet, Mn is right next to some fairly busy tracks.

We stayed at a campground at Fort Larmie WY. Campground is around 30 yards from mainline for coal trains, a good 4 or 5 per hour, a crossing just down the tracks so you get the horn blast all night long. Not good for sleep, but close up for trains.

A couple years ago, we were in Wisconsin Dells & although we didn't stay there, I'm pretty sure the KOA there is near tracks.

Rincon parkway between Santa Barbara and Ventura, El Capitan State Beach just north of Santa Barbara. I think there is some BLM off the I10 and the I40 in California near the Arizona border where you can park next to the tracks.

You can also book a railcar for the weekend, and stay next to the mainline near Glacier NP at the http://www.izaakwaltoninn.com/

Here is a link to a CG in Durango, Colorado. The Durango and Silverton train goes right thru the CG!

The Alpen Rose RV Park (Alpen Rose RV Park Durango, Colorado - Home), just north of Durango, CO, is less than half a mile from the track that runs between Durango and Silverton. There's a narrow gauge steam locomotive that uses that track for a daily excursion (Official Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Train). It's the train that was used for filming Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid movie.

Take care,
Stu
