When camping with pets keep a close eye on them. Mountain Lions will take them out. When I lived in rural ND I heard stories of a coyote tricking a dog to chase him only to have a pack of them waiting to ambush the dog. My close call story was when I was winter camping/backpacking in the Uinta Mountains of Utah...when I got up the next day there were cat tracks around my tent. Judging by the size it was most likely a Bob Cat.

If you play music they like to dance. Only show tunes however.

Common sense

A lot of great advice on these posts. I for one would have a very hard time getting the courage to pepper spray a bear in the face. To many what if's. I hiked many, many years in the Sandia mountains out west alone and never once had a close call or even a close encounter. Animals for the most part do not like humans and try to avoid them. If you make enough noise and do not spook them they will most likely be in the next county by the time you get to where they were.
