I can see real efficiency in putting all our refining capacity on the gulf coast - it'll only require one huricane to take 'em all out

Seriously though, I understand the reason for refining on the gulf due to the swapping of gas and diesel with Europe - but just up to the amount swapped. It doesn't justify not putting at least one refinery up North.

I think the pay-offs are cheaper down South!

There are refineries in the North. As only one example, ExxonMobil has a refinery in Billings, MT.

Is Wood River, IL north? ConocoPhilips has a 306,000 bbld/day refinery there...and talk about payoffs!

The thing is if the Keystone pipeline fails to go ahead we'll probably build the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline to our west coast. It has already 100 million of its 250 million cost funded by Asian refiners.Seems China wants all the heavy oil it can get.

If it was up to me I'd rather supply it to the USA. They are the ones that need the jobs and tax money.
