FYI!!!!
REMEMBER: Cell Phone Numbers Go Public next month.
REMINDER....all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sales calls.

.... YOU MAY BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS

To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222.
It is the National DO NOT CALL list.. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years.
You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different phone number.

HELP OTHERS BY PASSING THIS ON TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS... It takes about 20 seconds

It is not a rumor. I have a trac phone (pre-paid for a year) and in this past month I have started to get text messages from people advertising things. I have never given my number out. I use the phone for emergencies (break-downs) and rarely use it for anything else. I have never received text messages until the past month. I'm not sure if this is using my minutes up or not. The phone is off 99% of the time. When I turn it on now there are 2-3 text messages. I read the explanation at snopes. I don't believe their explanation. If they are correct, I should not be getting any messages!

Hi,
I just dialed this number and the pre-recorded voice said I reached New York State office. I was asked to key in the numbers, I did and was told a number to call in case any Telemarketer calls me.
I then went back to the Forum responses and read the posts about it being a hoax.
The recording sounded real.
I then did a ZABA search for reverse lookup and three listing were found
this is the response I got( was not going to pay or the info)

?????
What could be gained by this?Could this be one of those $20 phone call charges? I hope not.

Barrier - You got the "hoax" part confused...

The "hoax" part here is that you need to register your CELL phone number. It's just not true, yet at least.

The DO NOT CALL number is completely legit. Call it and register you HOME (land line) phone numbers. You can do it online as well at www.donotcall.gov Also, BTW - the registration does not expire like it used to "Telephone numbers placed on the National Do Not Call Registry will remain on it permanently due to the Do-Not-Call Improvement Act of 2007"

However, CELL phone numbers in total are still OFF LIMITS to telemarketers, the occasional glitch not withstanding (azloafer).

Telemarketers CAN NOT call CELL numbers. Hence, you do NOT need to register CELL numbers, only land line numbers.

Hi again,
I just did a search. This is the number given by the Federal Trade Commission. OK to call.

Thanks RV Dude, I am just glad it's not a pay for phone call.
I checked and reread no mention of cell phones you are correct.
I just wonder why the 888 number is listed by Intelius as in three different states and listed a relative??? (click the link I posted in my first reply).
Makes me wonder about their records.

So just did a little more fishing.... From the FTC web site
Q&A: The National Do Not Call Registry
The second paragraph is the one of interest...

What Phone Numbers Can I Register?

  1. Can I register my cell phone on the National Do Not Call Registry? Yes, you may place your personal cell phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry. The registry has accepted cell phone numbers since it opened for registrations in June 2003. There is no deadline to register a home or cell phone number on the Registry.

You may have received an email telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database; however, that is not the case. FCC regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers don’t call consumers on their cell phones without their consent.

I registered our cell phones a few years back. I will re-register every few years as a bit of added protection. There's nothing like "belts and suspenders" if there's any chance of keeping the telemarketers out of my house!

Hey Bill, Shhhh... Don't tell anyone.. I do the same thing... All my numbers and every couple years, or when I think about it... I like to call it "recreational registration!"

For SNAIL MAIL I even write to the

Direct Marketing Association
Mail Preference Service
Box 9008
Farmingdale, NY 11735-9008

And simply list all snail mail addresses to remove
After a couple years (also calling every 800# catalog that slips by) I now get practically zero junk snail mail.

And for EMAIL lists try the DMA stuff here www.dmachoice.org
