Against the law in most states to ride in tt or 5th. Door latches were changed years ago to open only by pulling up, after a DW fell out after she grabbed the handle.

In New York, a 5er is considered an 'articulated vehicle' and therefore legal to ride in while being towed. Is it right - no, but legal - I asked and at one point had a letter from the DMV stating so

The sense side of me says, even if it's legal, don't do it. Not allot of details in the story, but the child should have been supervised if it was riding in back.

Well,
it still doesn't protect us from ourselves...
had an associate of an associate that has TWICE put the steps up on a 5er to hook up the two dogs, let the dogs down, left the steps up and closed the door,
his wife fell out of the door twice !!!!
We no longer camp with them !

Back in 95 when I bought a 5r it was legal to ride in it in CA. A method of communication between tow and 5r was required iirc.

IN all states there are two sets of laws (I normally use this presentation with seat belts but it applies here as well)
There is the written law that fills libraris
And there are the laws of nature (Things like laws of motion, physics and such)
Those laws do not vary from place to place.. they are universal.
You break them,, as those parents did.. you either get hurt or you die.
On seat belts.. Your odds of walking away from an accident are multiplied by a factor of EIGHT when that buckle clicks locked.
Does matter what is in the law books.. But in nature not wearing that belt can be a capitol crime.
Same for riding in a trailer.

Do 5-ers have suspension shock absorbers? Most TTs don't and riding in one is a dreadful experience.
In any case, there's no way a child should be wandering around in a moving vehicle.
