Cleanig the Black Tank and the System overflowed through the Roof Vent!!!!

Hello Friends! Need your advise! I was draining my black tank yesterday morning and after it drained I hook up the hose to the cleaning tank bib and after 10 minutes of cleaning the water was clear and I shut the valve!! Then I let the water run for another 5 minutes to get some clean water in the tank and it started to overflow through the roof!!!! I shut the water went inside opened the 1/2 bath toilet and lifted the lid and it exploded!!! Dirty water everywhere, after a long clean up everything seemed OK, today I have a very strong smell coming out of the back bathroom any idea of what probably happened? How can I get this bad odor out of the MH!!!! Thanks in advance!!!!

Do you think maybe the tank cracked do to the pressure?

With waste water up to the roof, it's possible that some leaked out of the toilet to floor seal.

Check for wetness under the toilet.

So you closed the black drain, then filled till it overflowed up through the vent then without opening the drain valve went in and opened the tolets valve. Yes, having water explode out of the toilet seem right to me.

You had a water column 8' tall above the black tank. That water had to go someplace when you opened the tolet valve.

BTW, 8' of water has a pressure of about 3.47psi trying to push water out of your black tank so never open the tolet until you know the vent stack is completely empty.

I don't think 3.47psi is enough to damage the tank to piping.

Oh, that sounds like fun - NOT!!

Sorry this happened, and doubt it will ever happen again. Rule of thumb when rinsing the tanks, keep the valve opened, always.

Good chance you did a few things. A mentioned, check the seal around the bottom of the toilet. May need a new wax ring, or rubber seal, if that is what they used. If it did leak, even if you let it dry out, good chance of odors lingering. Maybe cram a few paper towels into the crack between the toilet bottom and floor, to see if still moist. If so, remove the toilet and clean it well, inspect the rubber gasket if it is used, or replace the wax ring if it was used.

I also think I would get some Happy Camper heavy duty cleaner, and do the dose recommend for black tank cleaning.

Best of luck to you,
Smitty

5 minutes is TOOO long if the campground water pressure is high. If you are gonna do it that way, do it for a shorter period or ???.. EWWWWW.

On the other hand with a tank cleaned out as you have explained, there should NOT have been noticeably dirty water water coming out... May have had the dreaded poop mountain going on... which loosened up with all the extra agitation. Or something like that. The cleaning tank bib may not be doing it's job...

Even small amounts of black water will smell the place up. Clean up all traces of black water.

Hello Again! I have checked the 1/2 bath that exploded and nothing seems to be leaking anywhere! The strong odor is coming from the rear bath that had no issues when this happened, I cannot understand it!!! I have checked the bottom of the MH for any type of leaks incase something happened to the black tank, but I do not see anything leaking out. I will clean tank again this coming weekend and see if I can take care of the odor!! This time around I have learned my lesson KEEP THE BLACK VALVE OPEN AT ALL TIMES!!! I will add extra water to the black tank after it's clean through the toilet!! Thanks for all of the good advice!!!

Don't leave the black tank valve open while parked!! That allows the liquid to drain away and leaves the solids behind to form the "poop pyramid".
I always let the tank fill at least if not full before dumping and in over 50 years of RV'ing I've never had a backup problem. That is until we bought the present rig. Seems the previous owner didn't know how to treat an RV system so I'm working on getting the tank cleaned out correctly. Getting better but still a ways to go.

How SMALL is that blank tank? When I rinse my 45 gal black tank it typically takes 15 minutes to get nearly full. BTW/FYI...I do run my rinse hose with a restrictor at 50 PSI.
