Conjugating Verbs

Before I start, I want to declare I am NOT an English teacher. I just paid close attention in grammar school MANY years ago when we would recite by rote the verbs and their proper tenses.

Conjugating verbs is the act of using verbs in different tenses.

Example of present tense:
I go
you go
he, she or it goes

Example of past tense:
I went
you went
he, she or it went

Example of past perfect tense:
I have gone
you have gone
he, she or it has gone

Examples of INCORRECT usage of verbs using past perfect:
I have WENT (gone)
I have RAN (run)
I SEEN (saw)

I could go on and on with the examples, but I do not wish to bore you to tears, but these misuses of verbs drive me nuts!

What say you?

^^^ beaten to the punch.

Spelling came fairly easy for me, hooked on phonics worked well and I still use it. I wasn't a particularly good student but listened in class. An interesting side note - I can tell when a person is a terrible speller by their speech, they'll mispronounce words because they don't know how to spell them. And when I'm speaking, I'll find myself searching for the spelling in my head so I can pronounce what I'm about to say.

Their, they're, there
Your, you're, yore
Two, to, too
Etc (ect)

There are dozens of others but you get the point.

I started using the internet back in '99 and in all the sites I've been a member on, the members have had remarkably good spelling. Until recently - I just joined an ATV site and ONE of the members uses text shorthand and terrible spelling - damn.

I have found that spelling and grammar tends to decline as the age demographic of a forum becomes younger.

Blame the "inventive spelling" teaching model of grammar schools in the 90s.

What bothers me more than improper verb conjugation is the replacement of words with numbers. "4" is a number, not a replacement for "for". "W8" is not the same as "wait". "U" is a letter, not the word "you". And for the love of Zeus, "thru" isn't a word of any kind. Just stop using it.

While I agree with the use of numbers or single letters, your last sentence isn't quite accurate,

"Thru" is an informal variant of "through" and functions the same way when used. "Through" is always acceptable for use, but "thru" should be restricted to informal, casual, or abbreviated usages.

"Lite" and "light" have a similar grammatical relationship, and the context in which they are used, formal or informal writing, generally determines if the usage of "lite" is acceptable. However, "Lite" is also used as a noun and would always be acceptable in that context.

'I could care less' tells me you still care a little.

'I couldn't care less' leaves no doubt.

I just wish that I could of started this thread!

Take care,
Stu

P.S. I learned more English grammar in my High School Latin class than my English classes. (sum, es, est, summus, estis, sunt...)

I dun learnt anglash good from my daddy's cousin/wife!

(I agree that finding fractured English in these threads is off-putting, but remember that some users are typing with their thumbs on cell phones and that their phones insert spelling and phases on their own.)

The abuse and misuse of contractions are another big irritant. There are many more abuses. We are losing the language.
