This was sent to my wife from a friend in Florida and is true. Follow the idea about covering it. Ours is coverd by the dash mat and I just move it for the emmisionsfolks to read it.
Hey Guys,
I got this e-mail forwarded to me. You may have seen this before... Your vehicle's VIN number
Seems that car thieves have found yet another way to steal your car or truck without any effort at all. The car thieves peep through the windshield of your car or truck, write down the VIN # from the label on the dash,
go to the local car dealership and request a duplicate key based on the VIN #.
I didn't believe this e-mail, so I called a friend at Chrysler Dodge and pretended I had lost my keys.
They told me to just bring in the VIN #, and they would cut me one on the spot, and I could order the
keyless device if I wanted. The Car Dealer's Parts Department will make a duplicate key from the
VIN #, and collect payment from the thief who will return to your car. He doesn't have to break in, do
any damage to the vehicle, or draw attention to himself. All he has to do is walk up to your car, insert
the key and off he goes to a local Chop Shop with your vehicle.
To avoid this from happening to you, simply put some tape (electrical tape, duct tape or medical tape)
across the VIN Metal Label located on the dash board. By law, you cannot remove the VIN, but you can
cover it so it can't be viewed through the windshield by a car thief. I urge you to forward this to your friends
before some other car thief steals another car or truck. I slipped a 3 x 5 card over the VIN #.
Amazing!! I too called my dealer and asked them how I get a set of keys. They said "just bring us your VIN number and we can issue another set!!" I told them about the e-mail and they said they would "look at their policy" and probably verify a persons identity before giving them a set of keys.

I thought it was just another on line rumor, but upon checking further and corresponding with a couple GM mechanic on another web site, it seems it is possible to have a key cut at a dealerships parts counter just by presenting a VIN#, I guess this is what happens in this new computer age, anyways I cut a small piece of card board and wrapped black electrical tape around it and wedged it in so it covers the VIN#, I would suggest everyone do the same because its better to be safe then sorry.

In some jurisdictions, it is against the law to obscure a car's VIN. New York City parking regulations, for example, specify that "No person shall stand or park a vehicle that has the vehicle identification number obscured in any manner."

We have a dash cover and it covers most of it . You just touch it a little and it moves out of the way.

I tossed a map of L.A. on top of mine. When it gets faded from the sun, I turn it over. Street maps are a common sight on dashes and the cops don't get excited.

Surly the dealers request proper identification to tie the person requesting the keys to the owner of the vehicle. If not, then the dealer is responsible for the theft.

WElcome Blewis, glad you found us. Tell us about yourself other than you are from Texas. Check out the Texas Boomers in the South Central Region. They camp quite a bit.

This was originally on 20/20 or Dateline.
They actually showed a lady going into a dealer and getting a key made from the VIN and going out and starting and driving off with the mechanics car!

I won't argue the point but..............
According to the VW and Toyota dealers here, a key CANNOT be made from just the VIN number from their own establishment. They say the manufacture can produce the 'key code' from the VIN but are very restrictive in doing so.
20/20, Dateline and 60 minutes are three of our favorite TV programs ...we must had missed the show you mentioned. I believe it is also their stated policy not to do anything illegal (such as theft) during the production of their programs ...guess they made an exception on this one?

You can't go into a toyota dealer and request a key with out the code. I have a Lexus and that is the first item they cover with you when you are taking possesion of your car.

Meanwhile, back at the auto seller place:
The salesperson is getting buyers to spend a couple hundred bucks for the VIN to be etched on all the glass. This is to make the car !!less likely !! to be stolen.
The "consumer" magazine to which I subscribe says this is a good idea, but to save money by getting a $30 DIY kit.
