Until the chipped cards come on line this will continue to be a problem. I try my best to not let my card get out of sight. If I have to leave a card with the gas clerk I give them an expired card, they don't look, just take the card and turn the pump on. When I'm done, I go back in and give them a real card. Although it is unconventional it works for me and I have not had a problem since. I suppose if the clerk looked, he/she would shut the pump down, but that has not been a problem...yet.

If your debit/check card is fraudulently used, then money has been removed from your account and it can take some time before the bank restores it.

That is also my philosophy. I do not have any Debit Cards.

Also, I do not use a Credit Card at any restaurant ... not ever.

I do not leave a card with anyone at a gas station. I will do multiple cards at the pump or do a partial fill. Yes, I know there is a potential for a skimmer on the pump.

I do what I can but about once a year I get the dreaded call from one CC company or another. They are very good at detecting "odd" stuff.

Interesting.
I rarely use my CC. Always use my debit card, usually use it as a CC. Problems? Sure. They catch, call, reissue. But it has not cost me a dime, ever.
Have been with the same FCU for 40 years.

Why should I fear any retail establishment if I have nothing to worry about?

OK ... for me, dining has always been cash ... not that we eat out more than once a week, if that. I've been doing that for around 50 years ... no reason to change.

Welcome to the club I guess. It's happened to us twice already as well. It is a pain but what can you do? Your comment about dishonest employees is probably right on the mark.
