I have a credit monitoring service. Enrolled years ago when I went to buy a house and encountered a bogus collection item. Cost me a higher interest rate and much hassle to get it cleared.

Have had a couple other similar instances since - with the difference being that I knew about it right away and was able to proactively get them cleared before any damage was done and with minimal effort.

I hate spending the monthly fee - but feel its worth it.

Vince & Susan,

I agree, it can be a mess if you need it. Company my wife used was $15 a month she tells me. Interestingly when we continued both of them she got the same alerts on hers as she did on Credit Karma.

But it is a piece of mind having something to protect your identity.

Another problem is if you have a common name, Debt Collectors can go into your credit file and do significant damage without your knowledge. But if you know right away you can protest it. If you let it go without doing anything you will be assumed guilty by the credit agencies. Before you know it they have a judgement against you. The consumer laws are extremely weak right now so you have to be ready to fight.

Regarding credit scores: From what I've read the scores you purchase from these places are useless. They are not the same scores that lenders or other establishments use when applying for a loan or buying insurance, etc. In fact I read recently that there was a bill working it's way through Congress to require credit reporting agencies to offer the same score access to the public as they do the lenders and insurers. Not sure where that bill went or if it got killed.
I check my credit three times a year, through annualcreditreport.com, for free. I also monitor my online financials daily.

You are correct that it is better than nothing. But it is only 1\3 of what you need.

You are seeing the results of only TransUnions credit file. If fraudulent info is posted with Equifax or Experian, you will not be notified. Thus, you are vulnerable.
