Diesel pusher favorites and best quality

We are going to the big Ft. Worth RV show this next week. I'm trying to get a feel for the current best quality diesel pusher company out there. Here in Texas we hear a lot about Newmar and Tiffin. I'm reading more and more about Tiffin's quality going down. Coming from the telecom industry where quality and dependability has improved enormously, I find it difficult to read about the RV industry's quality problems. Any thoughts or comments on the quality of certain RV companies?

Had a 2000 and 2002 DSDP. Had the '02 up until mid Feb of last year. It was the most trouble free of any RV we've ever owned even after 13 years.

I would have to agree. All the new wiz bang stuff is great but when you have problems it can be a night mare to get fixed, even under warranty. Also with older units they won't have as much pollution equipment strapped on to the engine. This can be a major headache also when not working properly.

What's your budget ? The best quality would be Prevost conversions, Newell, etc.

I like the Newmar brand. I own one and many of my friends do to. Monaco would be my second choice. Don't rule out a higher end used coach either. Just spend the money to have it inspected.

Well, you can save on the price, but maybe not on the repairs if something big needs rebuilding and you can't do it yourself!

I would consider Entegra and American Coach in addition to Newmar and Tiffen. All of these companies make good products, none of them make a perfect one. Entegra is the only one with a two year warranty, the rest are only one year.

If you are considering used I would add Monaco, Beaver, Holiday Rambler, Travel Supreme, and Country Coach to the above list.

I am also in the camp that the older stuff is the best deal for the educated motorhomer. I feel that quality took a hit after the 2008 model year in rv's due to the economic downturn. Bus conversions not so much. In a former life I sold Winnebago, American coach, Monaco, Holiday Rambler new and most brands on the used side up until around 05. Last spring I purchased what I thought was a great coach during my time as a salesperson, an older Winnebago vectra grand tour with the 6bt 12 valve with a 6 speed for the cost of a good used truck and I don't regret it. It's such a simple machine and it still looks contemporary.

My second choice was an American coach with an 8.3 ( even with the mechanical) engine made from the late 90's till around 02. They built them right. I don't really care for the bells and whistles (not to mention emissions and DEF) some of these newer coaches, and to be honest any brand coach over 10 years old is going to be just as hard to find service for as my 20 year old but may not be built as well. I can still order body parts and special parts from the manufacturer, don't try that with a holiday rambler, country coach, Monaco or pretty much any other brand.

Tiffin is ranked among the Top manufacturers for a reason ! Tiffin quality is just fine. You can find disgruntled owners of every brand including the top priced Prevost and Newmar.
We are on our second Tiffin and it has never been in for anything that was related to Tiffin construction. Our next coach will be a Tiffin as well.

You must have missed out on the leaking roofs and wet bay problems posted on the forum.

Lets face it, every manufacturer builds bad ones at some time.

As you do your tire kicking also take a look at brand specific forums. For Tiffin check out the Tiffin RV Network forum. Read through their posts and see what the issues are and have been and how the company has dealt with them. For Forest River Berkshire or Charleston check out the Forest River Owners Group Forum. Both of these forums have good info on them about the specific brands. One of the best areas to check out is the Red Bay link regarding people getting service at the factory in Alabama.

Once you establish your budget then it will be much easier for everyone to give you their responses. Some will suggest used and some will suggest new as well as brand specific recommendations. Enjoy your search.

Here's an interesting thread on the subject http://www.irv2.com/forums/f278/ente...ty-275666.html

One could take from this that there are tons of problems with even the high end brands, or that you should expect problems no matter what brand you choose and it's really the commitment of the manufacturer to make things right that counts

You did not mention your budget or the type of DP you're looking for. Entry level like the Fleetwood Excursion or Thor Pilazzo. Next level up like the Fleetwood Discovery I'm about to buy or the Tiffins. Or the Entegra/Newmar level. They span a range (new) from around $130K to well over $500k.
