I think I remember that episode. 
We have a couple of born again bozos in the Alberni Valley who are vociferously marketing themselves as the only survivors if world famine comes about and all the other predicted disasters which will annihilate human life as we know it. Thankfully they have already publicly stated that I am not on their list of people to save. 
Whew am I glad about that.

It makes me laugh when the government build these doomsday shelters so that they can survive these disasters and emerge to rule .. nobody!

I don't want to goto the extreme but as others have stated SOME preperation is good. We also keep our Rv stocked with water, propane, gas and all the waste tanks empty. We live in California where the big one is suppose to hit someday. But after watching what the people on the east coast have gone through after Sandy I am rethinking my plans. Nothing crazy, but additional water and gas and a few extra propane bottles so we could support ourselves in case of a real disaster. I have done some research in the net and found companies that sell 275 gallon totes for fresh water for $125.00 and steel 55 gallon drums for $15.00 and bottles of propane are cheap enough to have a few extras around (for the BBQ if it runs out while cooking some burgers). So for a little money and storage space I could count on myself and not on the government services. Maybe it's the Boy Scout coming out in me.

On a slightly different, but somewhat related, subject there is a show they play once and awhile on PBS called "Alone In the Wilderness". This guy moves to Alaska and builds a cabin all by himself with hand tools. He really knows his stuff. I have it recorded and we watch it at the campground when it rains. I wish I owned the full DVD of it but, it's always so expensive. Anyway, if it all comes to a end I want a guy like that around.

Saw the show the OP speaks of today; Wife and I agree we want to be at ground zero of the apocalypse. No use trying to deal with a nuked out world at our age.

My survival plan bit the dust a few weeks ago when Hostess announced they where shutting down.
My plan was to buy up Twinkies. Apparently they are good for about twenty five years before they go bad.
