Personally, I do not eat, drink, listen to music, hold conversations, or wave at anyone because my total attention is on my driving, and on the road. Being the operator of an 13 ton RV requires dedicated operational duty. IMHO.

And that's your right!! However, my wife has spent many years training me to multi-task:-). So I can actually drive and wave! Plus we like to be friendly here in Texas!!!

Ok so when I get the one finger salute, I make sure to smile broadly and blow them a kiss. Like I think they just blew me a kiss, I get looks of confusion in response. Fun.

Don't forget the further north one goes... the smaller the acknowledgment gesture is...
in Texas.. ya get the arm flopping out of the car whole arm wave...
by the time you reach Kansas... you get an inside the vehicle fingers up off the steering wheel or 2 finger salute from the left hand while still on or close to the steering wheel, but by the time you get to South Dakota, all they can muster up is to lift one (index) finger and nod the head at ya!

Funny topic. I've actually thought about this quite a bit over the years. Having ridden motorcycles a great deal in my youth, I liked the practice of acknowledging other cyclist as we passed and response was almost universal... except of course Harley riders who only seem to acknowledge other Harley riders.
On long cross country trips in our coach, I've tried waving and, more often, flashing my lights via the momentary switch on the smart wheel (no it's not the high beams)... but I'll bet the responses I've gotten can be counted on one hand. It sometimes happens when one rig is passing the other going in the same direction but rarely when going in opposite directions.
I've never taken this as rude behavior but have wondered why it is like it is. On the other hand, I've never seen anyone give me the one finger salute so I guess it's a draw.

Driver Waves
MartySQ and ALL:
Just for the sake of accuracy, up here in South Dakota the single index finger wave to oncoming drivers is reserved for roads traveled on the EAST side of the river (Missouri), while over on the WEST side of the river the wave is simply touching the brim of yer hat!! (Not sure...but I think it's a law or sumthin.. ).

Years ago out on the road truckers would always wave at one another, but it seems like that has died out. I still see bikers acknowledge one another with a wave. I too wave at other Rv's, and some return the wave and most don't. I'm happy when I am out traveling, and have met alot of friendly folks out on the road, but there are some that just seem to be focused on getting to where they are going.

No...it's NOT just RVers who show their appreciation by 'waving'..
it's also done by those who happen to own the type of car shown below:
Been in quite a few of these over the years and have lost count how many times someone in another approaching corvette has shared a 'wave'...for their appreciation of what a real sports car is!

Now THAT'S a sports car!!!!
I appreciate all the new exotic machines out there now and they are certainly incredible... but there's a special place in my heart for the originals.
Thanks for sharing the great pic.

I had a corvette until last summer and still find myself waving. Not the same in a Cruze. LOL...and I wave at other RVs.

Us British sports car owners wave at each other because we appreciate the miracle that the things run at all......

WOW, this must be a very important subject. Two threads running at the same time about the same thing. Driving Courtesy and Why cant other motorhomes you pass wave?
