I went outside to the back yard about midnight. The moon wa full and very bright. I decided to sit and wait to see the eclipse. It started about an hour later and then at about 1:45 it got totaly dark and I couldn't see the moon any more. I didn't stay out untill the eclipse ended. I had to get my beauty sleep. I hope all of you that watched the show enjoyed it. We can now say we witnessed a historic event. That being the total eclipse of the moon on the same day as the winter soltice.

In a total lunar eclipse the moon doesn't disappear in darkness - it turns from it's normal white color to a ruddy red, but it is still visible.

Lunar eclipses occur fairly frequently. The "rare" thing about this total eclipse is that it occurred on the Winter Solstice. I think December 2011 will be the next total lunar eclipse we can see.

I saw part of it and what I did see was much better than what I was able to get on camera.

Yes, I knew that. What I meant and probably should have sad was, " I couldn't see the normal light comming from the Moon" It was still visible. I was trying to point out the exagerated difference between the bright reflected light from full Moon and the decreased amout of reflected light from the Moon in total eclipse.
