Yeah, a Can-Am isn't overpriced, so this MUST be a scam. LOL.

I have a deposit on one. The fine print says that the spec of the car and the final price are not guaranteed. So some stuff may go from standard to optional in the final version - no one knows for sure.

But they seem to be pluggin along toward production. I'm buying one as a fun toy, not as needed efficient transportation. So if it happens, it happens.

I cannot envision a "car" at $6800 that could possibly be real when a Can Am Spyder is $17 to $30K. No way folks.

I have been following Elio Motors as well. I don't have any skin ($$$) in the game, but am on their mailing list.

In regards to crash test ratings, from what I have read from Elio and what I understand from NHSTA, is that they cannot get a "true" crash test rating until the vehicle has been on the market for at least 6 months. At, or sometime after that point, a vehicle will be purchased anonymously and tested.

Would I like this for an "around town" car - maybe. Would I drive this vehicle on highways? Probably not ... for the same reason that I don't think I would drive a SmartCar (with all its' safety items) on the highway.

For 10 years we drove a Caravan Sport, the last 5 years we've driven a VW Tiguan. When I get into a car/sedan - like a Honda Accord our son has - I feel uncomfortable being so low. I can't even imagine what it would feel like being in an Elio or a SmartCar when driving next to an 18 wheeler.

2labs - you bring back my memory of the first time I drove my Miata out on the interstate with the top down. Merged into traffic at 70mph right next to a huge 18-wheeler. My windscreen didn't even reach the height of one of it's tires! I haven't done that since - was in '97.

People are not aware of what will make these cheap - they are getting a former GM factory for assembly for practically nothing - they are using cheap labor down in Louisiana (most likely just above minimum wage) - it's a simple tube frame vehicle with a plastic skin - the engine is tiny and older technology - and finally, they have all these supplier relationships set up, so probably no parts inventory cost.

I hate to sound like I've drank the kool-aid, but I haven't. I'm cautiously hopeful. It's only $100 bucks at stake. I'm pretty certain the final price will rise a bit. They are forecasting $1000 profit in each unit, so I don't quite get how that works for a dealer network, if they end up with one. Their business plan is not very solid, that is for sure.

It carries two people and the engine is that of Geo Metro 1.0L 3 cylinder. Us guys that drive Geo's recognize the engine a mile away. Those engines I have seen them get 325,000 miles and it's a non interference motor.

Those with questions should check out their website.

The Geo motor was for the prototype. They are getting their own engine from one of their "partner" companies.

The interior of the Elio is *VERY* Toyota-esque to me. I am thinking that they are sourcing parts from Toyota.

I believe it is actually a engine designed by IAV specifically for the Elio. I'm not sure though.
