Extending the carport?
I made a big mistake when I built my carport. It is only 36 feet long. I am now considering upgrading from a 30ft gasser to a 40ft DP. What are my options? Is it possible to extend the roof without extending the base? I was thinking by adding 3 or 4 ft to each end of the roof I could at least get the new coach under the roof.

Hi Larry! What's that they say about hindsight?
Maybe you could contact the company that built the carport and see what they suggest.

Most likely yes it can be extended. You shared no details of how its constructed so no specifics to reply. But assuming an example of a typical metal RV port - each end likely can have just the roof extended without have support added to the ground. A friend of mine had this done to his metal RV port. As commented already, contact the company that originally installed the unit or another similar company.

I have the same problem with a 36 foot RV shelter. Except, I have already upgraded to a 40 foot DP and now the rear end sticks out. I called the people who put it in, Carolina metal buildings, and they will sell the materials to me to extend it myself but they will not do it themselves. They do not want the liability of a possible failure of a short extension.

Carolina Carport is who I got mine from as well. This is good news. Did they quote you a price? However, I will probably find someone to install it. I am getting too old to work that high up in the air.[emoji33]

I am still a couple of years away from upgrading, but have already started my research.

Should be doable as I commented previously. As I said a friend of mine had similar and the builder extended the roof - add a diagonal brace back to the existing end uprights. I had also looked into such a RV port for my property and discussed not having uprights at the end with multiple builders. All said no problem to hang another 4' section without leg extending to the ground.
And if you do want it need a leg to provide support - just pour a footing for the leg instead of extending the whole slab.

Vsheetz,
What you describe is kinda what I had in mind. I just didn't know if it was doable. I sure would like to see a picture of one that had this done to.

Yep... a 5 foot extension is right at $370 and an 8 foot around $460. You have to pick up the material yourself. There is a Carolina factory about 100 miles from my home in Missouri. I have full walls on mine and I see yours is half walls so yours may be cheaper.

Where is that located?
Unless I am misunderstanding something, the extension sides would angle back from the end of the extension to some point on the original structure. I was thinking that would be the same point no matter how far down the sides extend.

Is your pad thick enough to handle the extra weight?

I think so. It is 6" thick with plenty of rebar.
